BERKELEY, Calif. – With no shortage of chances at producing the game's first goal, the Northeastern men's soccer team kept a scoreless pace with California for the majority of Friday's match at Edwards Stadium, despite the Huskies conceding late and enduring a 1-0 setback against the Golden Bears.
Â
NU rookie striker
Dan Munch led the charge for Northeastern (0-2-0), placing two of his four shot attempts on net while also stepping back to initiate four of the Huskies' eight corners.
Khori Bennett supplemented Munch's productivity with three shot attempts of his own, including a strong opportunity at the equalizing goal during the 83rd minute. Together, the NU duo accounted for seven of Northeastern's 10 shots and four of its six shots on goal.
Â
Jonathan Thuresson withstood 15 shots from California (1-1-0), four of which found their way on target. The NU keeper denied every one until the 79th minute, when Spencer Held snuck one by him to give the Golden Bears a 1-0 lead.
Â
Coincidentally, Northeastern's 15-10 shot margin that it attained against California during the 2015 season was flipped on Friday night during the two team's second all-time meeting, pointing 15-10 in favor of the home side. Although the Golden Bears managed to outshoot the Huskies by five, NU held a two-shot margin in shots on goal (6-4), in addition to its 8-7 edge in corners.
Â
Friday's match witnessed the season debuts of Northeastern's
Martin Nygaard and
Alec Supinski, while
Dom Galletti also saw 28 minutes of action as a reserve.
Â
Four NU players were cautioned during a match that saw six total bookings: Munch (21st minute),
Moustapha Samb (27th),
Edward Okey (62nd), and
Cameron Okoro (84th). Northeastern was also caught offside five times to the Golden Bears' one.
