HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Breaking out to a 1-0 lead during the first half on
Harry Swartz's second goal of the season, the Northeastern men's soccer team held its ground against Hofstra on Wednesday night until Matthew Vowinkel's 76th-minute equalizer ended up prolonging the match into double overtime, where it ended in a 1-1 draw.
Â
Swartz's goal provided the cherry to the Huskies' opening statement, during which Northeastern (2-5-2, 1-1-1 CAA) had built a 5-1 shot advantage and controlled the majority of possession.
Gaku Lange sandwiched two tries around
Dan Munch's attempt, all three of which took place before Swartz's 22nd-minute give-and-go with
Lewis Aird.
Â
Three minutes after Swartz's strike,
Adama Kaba had an opportunity to bump the Huskies' lead to 2-0. Kaba used his nifty footwork to navigate around his defenders and create open space from roughly 20 yards away, but ended up lofting his attempt over the crossbar.
Â
NU goalkeeper
Jonathan Thuresson made nine saves, equaling his career high from Sept. 9 against No. 12 UMass Lowell. Thuresson put on a brilliant defensive display during the Pride's best attacking sequence of the match, recording three saves on six shots faced during a two-minute span just after the hour mark.
Â
Five of Northeastern's 14 shot attempts came from left wing rookie
Dan Munch, who struck three attempts on target.
Khori Bennett charted two attempts as a reserve, managing to hit the crossbar during the 107th minute.
Â
After coming up empty on its first 12 shots of the match, Hofstra (1-3-5, 0-0-3 CAA) finally found the netting on its 13th try, leveling the game with less than 15 minutes remaining in regulation. Although the Pride would go on to outshoot the Huskies, 7-4, during extra time, Thuresson saved both attempts on target, allowing Northeastern to earn a key league point.
Â
The Huskies also did well disrupting Hofstra's 11 corners, managing to create five of their own.
With the draw, NU maintains its one-point lead on Hofstra in the CAA table. The Huskies finished the day in a tie for third place in the conference with James Madison.
