BOSTON – For the first time since 1988, the Beanpot is coming is back to Huntington Avenue as the No. 12/11 Northeastern men's hockey team battled back from a goal down to defeat Boston University comfortably, 5-2, during Monday's championship game at TD Garden.
Adam Gaudette's hat trick landed the NU junior 2018 Beanpot Most Valuable Player honors, while the Huskies' rookie netminder
Cayden Primeau saved 75 of the 77 shots on goal he faced during the tournament en route to becoming Northeastern's first Eberly Trophy winner since 2011 (Chris Rawlings).
Â
Three power-play goals from the top power-play unit in Hockey East lifted Northeastern (17-8-5) over the boards and into a dog pile in front of Primeau's net as the program rejoiced in its fifth Beanpot title and first in 30 years.
Â
Gaudette recorded his second hat trick of the 2017-18 season, breaking the two teams' 1-1 tie during the closing three minutes of the first period that provided NU with the lead for the remainder of the night.
Nolan Stevens countered Logan Cockerill's opening goal for Boston University (15-12-3), which has now finished runner-up to NU during each of the Huskies' last four Beanpot titles (1984, 1985, 1988, 2018). Senior defenseman
Trevor Owens rocketed Northeastern's third goal, while Gaudette netted the Huskies' final two, including the empty-net response to Shane Bowers' third period goal.
GOAL RECAPS
•
Boston University (12:35, 1st): Hank Crone played the puck along the right boards to Logan Cockerill, who from behind the goal line, slipped the puck between his legs and into the slot, where it deflected off
Cayden Primeau and inside the near post.
Â
•
Northeastern (14:38, 1st): On the Huskies' first power play of the night,
Nolan Stevens toe-dragged around his defender at the top of the right circle, deking past Jake Oettinger, backhand to forehand.
Â
•
Northeastern (17:32, 1st): The Huskies improved to two-for-two on the power play when
Dylan Sikura picked up the puck in the right corner and cut to the right faceoff dot, before throwing a centering pass across the crease for
Adam Gaudette to fire home at the left of the cage.
•
Northeastern (14:32, 2nd): Patrick Schule skated in on the right wing and threw a cross-ice pass to
Trevor Owens, who rifled his shot from the bottom of the left circle, over Jake Oettinger's blocker, and under the crossbar.
Â
•
Northeastern (19:56, 2nd): At the left point,
Jeremy Davies threw a diagonal pass to
Dylan Sikura in the low, right slot. Sikura quickly shifted the puck back across the goal-mouth to
Adam Gaudette for a one-timer at the right of the cage for the Huskies' third power-play goal of the game.
•
Boston University (17:20, 3rd): With an extra skater on the ice, BU worked the puck to Shane Bowers at the left of the cage. Bowers was initially denied by the sprawling Primeau, but the loose puck trickled behind the NU netminder to reduce the Huskies' lead to 4-2.
•
Northeastern (19:30, 3rd): Adam Gaudette buried the empty-net goal, locking up his second hat trick of the season and sealing Northeastern's Beanpot championship.
