AUBURN, Ala. – Receiving nearly eight complete innings of no-hit pitching by sophomore stud
Sean Mellen, the Northeastern baseball team scored a major program win against No. 17 Auburn during the second game of Saturday's doubleheader, ending the ranked Tigers' undefeated season with a 2-1 victory at Plainsman Park in the wake of its game one, 14-8 defeat.
Â
Mellen came within four outs of throwing the Huskies' first no-hitter since April 7, 2006 (Adam Ottavino), opening the eighth inning with his eighth strikeout prior to surrendering a walk to Brett Wright and a two-out RBI double to Edouard Julien that halved the NU lead to 2-1.
Max Burt made an exceptional defensive play at shortstop to prevent the tying run from crossing the plate, throwing out Julien at home to end the inning and keep Mellen (two hits, one run, eight innings) in line for the victory.
Â
Saturday's nightcap marked the second time during Mellen's collegiate career that he had taken a no-hitter into the seventh inning and beyond. Opposing Toledo at the 2017 Snowbird Classic (March 8), the then-rookie collected 20 outs before allowing his first hit, despite easily picking up the first winning decision of his career.
Â
Andrew Misiaszek relieved Mellen at the start of the ninth inning, inducing three ground balls around Williams' single through the right side to earn his second save of the year.
Â
Northeastern (9-5) improved to 3-4 against SEC opponents this season, having previously split a four-game series against Missouri between Feb. 23 and Feb. 25. The Huskies successfully outhit Auburn (15-1) during both doubleheader games – 16-14 then 6-3 – becoming the first and second opponents on the Tigers' 2018 schedule to do so.
Â
Jake Farrell led the Huskies' offense during game two, factoring in during both Northeastern scoring plays. The NU first baseman and cleanup hitter belted an RBI double during the top of the first inning that provided the Huskies with their first lead of the series, later scoring during the fifth inning on
Cam Walsh's RBI single after a close play at the plate.
Â
Zach Perry recorded his first multi-hit game of the 2018 season, going two-for-four despite being stranded twice.
Including Saturday's 2-1 result against No. 17 Auburn, Northeastern has now won at least one game during each of its last three multi-game series against NCBWA ranked competition, including a win against No. 15 College of Charleston (May 2015) and two wins against No. 30 Oklahoma (Feb. 2016).
GAME ONE
Michael Geaslen's three-run homer was the highlight moment of the Northeastern baseball team's seven-run ninth inning during the opening game of Saturday's doubleheader against No. 17 Auburn, despite the Tigers holding onto their late-game lead to prevail, 14-8, at Plainsman Park.
Northeastern totaled 16 hits, receiving a pair of four-hit performances by
Cam Walsh (four-for-five) and
Max Burt (four-for-four).
Â
Walsh opened the second, fourth, and eighth innings with a trio of leadoff singles, in addition to hammering a two-RBI double during the Huskies' ninth-inning rally. Burt was pegged with a pitch during his first at-bat en route to reaching safely during each of his five plate appearances, earning his lone RBI during Northeastern's wild ninth inning.
Â
Auburn's lineup combined to swing six home runs off the Huskies' arms, yielding eight of the Tigers' 14 runs. Brett Wright homered twice and was one of three Auburn batters that ended the day with three RBIs, joining Steven Williams (three-for-five) and Brendan Venter (two-for-five).
Â
Tyler Brown received the loss after being responsible for seven runs during his five innings on the mound, striking out three while walking two.
Owen Batchelder tossed a scoreless inning of relief during the bottom of the seventh.
UP NEXT
The Huskies will make their 2018 Friedman Diamond debut on Tuesday, March 13, when Northeastern kicks off its New England non-conference schedule against Hartford. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
