WHILE WE WERE AWAY
Northeastern is off to its best regular-season start since the 2009 season, when NU had also attained a 9-5 record through its first 14 games. Here's a look at the Huskies' early-season highlights:
• Northeastern ranks as the No. 4 team in the
March 14 RPI rankings, trailing (in order) Clemson, Texas Tech, and Auburn. The Huskies are 5-5 against teams currently ranked within the top 20 of the RPI, having gone 1-2 against Auburn (No. 3), 2-2 against Missouri (No. 16), and 2-1 against Creighton (No. 17).
• As of March 14, the Huskies have been responsible for generating three of the combined four losses that appear on Auburn and Missouri's overall record. Northeastern's 2-1 victory against No. 17 Auburn on March 10 snapped the Tigers' 15-game winning streak to begin the season.
• NU is 4-1 against BIG EAST opponents this year and 3-4 against SEC competition. Sophomore starting pitcher
Sean Mellen boasts a perfect, 4-0 record against these two conferences, in addition to possessing a team high, 36 strikeouts, and team low, 1.33 ERA (27 innings pitched).
• The Huskies swept their four-game stay at the 2018 Snowbird Classic (Port Charlotte, Florida), picking up wins against Presbyterian (6-1), Dartmouth (10-8), Villanova (1-0), and Georgetown (9-5). Northeastern's 2018 sweep marked its first at the Snowbird Classic since 2013.
NOTEWORTHY
• Junior outfielder
Charlie McConnell, senior shortstop
Max Burt, and junior first baseman
Jake Farrell are each hitting above .380 this season through 14 regular-season starts. McConnell leads the squad in batting average (.393) and stolen bases (10), while Farrell paces NU in extra-base hits (nine), RBIs (14), and slugging percentage (.636).
• Sophomore second baseman
Scott Holzwasser has also made 14 starts for Northeastern and is hitting .298. He leads the Huskies in runs scored (12) and has belted two doubles, two triples, and two home runs this season.
• Among NCAA Division I pitchers, sophomore left-hander
Sean Mellen ranks in a tie for 23rd in strikeouts (36) and among the top 100 in ERA (1.33) and hits allowed per nine innings (5.53). His 27 innings pitched rank as the third most among those with 4-0 records.
• Northeastern leads the CAA in batting average (.284) and ranks 67th among NCAA Division I programs in the same category – one position higher than Boston College (.283).
LOOKING AHEAD
Northeastern will contest a four-game series against No. 5 Texas Tech in Lubbock, beginning on Friday, March 23. Both the Huskies and the Red Raiders rank among the top four programs in the latest RPI (per March 14).
