PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – Senior right-hand arm
Brian Christian logged season highs in both strikeouts (seven) and innings pitched (six) on Friday night at the 2018 Snowbird Classic as the Northeastern baseball team rolled past Presbyterian, 6-1, during the Huskies' opening game of their five-day trip.
Â
Christian started the game by retiring the Blue Hose in order and immediately received two first-inning runs of offensive support from the NU lineup. Despite losing the shutout during the top of the third inning, he continued to throw with the lead for the remainder of his outing as he went on to collect his first winning decision of the 2018 season.
Â
Northeastern (5-3) jumped out to a 2-0 lead against Presbyterian (5-7) during the bottom of the first inning without recording a hit. The Huskies loaded the bases on three walks issued by Tanner Chock, scoring first as
Max Burt drew the fourth walk off Chock, then again on
Zach Perry's RBI groundout to second base.
Â
After the Blue Hose had halved the Huskies' lead to 2-1 during the top of the third, Northeastern regained a two-run advantage during the bottom of the inning as
Kyle Peterson lifted an RBI single into right field, scoring Burt.
Â
In the wake of the Huskies' defense helping Christian strand two base runners during the top of the fifth inning, the NU offense managed to tack on another pair of insurance runs.
Jake Farrell circled the bases one leg at a time with help from a pair of Presbyterian battery miscues, touching home on a wild pitch to extend Northeastern's lead to 4-1. Peterson followed with a double, prompting three more walks by Chock that put the Huskies in front, 5-1, and sent the Blue Hose to the bullpen.
Ryan Solomon capped Northeastern's six-run evening during the bottom of the sixth inning, directing an RBI single to left field that scored Farrell.
Â
Brian Rodriguez and
David Stiehl combined to keep Christian's one-run score line in tact. Stiehl earned the final five outs of the game after helping Rodriguez out of an eighth-inning jam by initiating a 5-3 double play.
