BOSTON – Rested up after Tuesday's 18-inning marathon victory against Boston College, the Northeastern baseball team will once again depart snowy New England for the American sun belt as the Huskies prepare to oppose No. 10 Texas Tech – their second top-20 opponent during the last three weeks – at Rip Griffin Park in Lubbock, Texas. The two sides will open their four-game series on Friday, March 23, at 7:30 p.m. EST, contest a doubleheader on Saturday, March 24 (1 p.m. EST and 5 p.m. EST), and conclude play on Sunday, March 25, at 1:30 p.m. EST.

TOP-10 RPI MATCHUP

This weekend's series between the Huskies and the Red Raiders will rank as the best in college baseball in terms of RPI. Per the March 21 rankings, Texas Tech ranks No. 3 in the country with its 10-0 home record, while Northeastern ranks No. 7 with its 8-5 combined record against the SEC, ACC, and BIG EAST.

ALL-TIME SERIES

Friday's weekend opener between Northeastern and Texas Tech will mark the two programs' inaugural series meeting.

DEEP IN THE HEART

Northeastern is 6-13 since 2013 when competing in the Lone Star State, but the Huskies have won four of their last seven games in Texas and each of their last three series openers. Most recently, NU split a four-game series at Abilene Christian (Abilene, Texas) during the second weekend of the 2016 season.

AGAINST THE BIG 12

The Huskies are 2-5 all-time against the current Big 12 alignment. Northeastern's two victories occurred during the opening two games of the 2016 season, when NU upset No. 30 Oklahoma twice – 3-2 and 5-3 – at L. Dale Mitchell Park en route to splitting the two programs' four-game set. The Huskies also came within two runs of defeating Kansas at the 2015 Snowbird Classic (Port Charlotte, Florida), playing to the 6-4 result.

AGAINST RANKED FOES

Northeastern has already collected a victory against a ranked opponent this season, having kicked off its current three-game winning streak by handing No. 17 Auburn its first loss of the year, 2-1, on March 10 at Plainsman Park. With the win, the Huskies have now won at least one game during each of their last three multi-game series against NCBWA ranked competition. Prior to splitting its four-game, season-opening series against No. 30 Oklahoma during 2016, Northeastern had knocked off No. 15 College of Charleston during the Huskies' 2015 Senior Week home stand at Friedman Diamond, which clinched NU its first top-three CAA regular-season finish since 2006 (bettered by Northeastern's 2017 CAA regular-season championship).

MARATHON MEN

NU will arrive in Lubbock coming off its thrilling, 18-inning victory against Boston College (7-4) during the inaugural game played at the Eagles' new Brighton Field. Northeastern never trailed BC throughout the duration of the five-hour and 24-minute affair, despite the two teams remaining deadlocked at 3-3 from the end of the sixth inning to the top of the 14th, then again at 4-4 until the Huskies plated their three winning runs during the top of the 18th.

Since the beginning of the 2016 season, Northeastern is the only NCAA Division I program to compete in multiple games lasting 18 innings or longer. On March 25, 2016, the Huskies lost a 19-inning CAA tilt at James Madison by a score of 7-6 that had lasted five hours and 46 minutes. Both games respectively rank as the first and second longest during Northeastern history in terms of both innings pitched and game duration.

HEADLINES

• Like Texas Tech, Northeastern's 2018 forte is its offense. The Huskies' series-entering batting average (.279) ranks as the 77th best in Division I, although the Red Raiders (.297) rank among the top 35 teams in the same category.

• While NU ranks in a tie for 49th in Division I in doubles per game (2.00), Texas Tech ranks in a tie for 37th in the nation in home runs per game (0.95), yet both teams rank among the top 20 programs in triples per game.

• Charlie McConnell boasts the best qualifying batting average on both the Huskies and the Red Raiders. The NU junior is hitting .406 through 16 regular-season starts and is coming off a five-for-nine performance during Tuesday's 18-inning marathon win against Boston College – swinging three distinct parts of the cycle during each of his first three at-bats and finishing with two triples.

• Jake Farrell continues to pace Northeastern in slugging percentage (.632). The junior first baseman leads the squad in doubles (seven), home runs (three), and RBIs (16).

• Sean Mellen improved to 5-0 this season upon delivering six shutout innings against Hartford on March 19 during the Huskies' 2018 home opener. Mellen, who threw seven and two-thirds innings of no-hit baseball during the Huskies' March 10 upset of No. 17 Auburn, ranks second in the CAA in ERA (1.09), third in both strikeouts (41) and innings pitched (33), and fourth in opposing batting average (.181).

• This weekend will mark the start of the 2018 CAA conference schedule, which Northeastern will begin with a bye. The Huskies will close the season with eight consecutive weekend series against league foes.

UP NEXT

Northeastern will continue its 10-game road stand on Wednesday, March 28, when the Huskies travel to Rhode Island's Bill Beck Field to take on the Rams at 3 p.m.
