LUBBOCK, Texas –
Jake Farrell's two-RBI double during the top of the fifth inning injected life into the Northeastern baseball team's cause midway through Friday's series opener against No. 10 Texas Tech, despite the Red Raiders' offense proving to be too much to handle as the Huskies were defeated, 22-3, at Rip Griffin Park.
Â
Farrell's double was the third of three that Northeastern (11-6) managed to swing against Texas Tech (18-5), which had entered Friday ranked 51st among Division I programs in ERA (3.50).
Cam Walsh and
Ian Fair recorded the Huskies' preceding two-base hits; Walsh staged his during the second at-bat of the game, while Fair managed to one-hop the left field fence for a ground-rule double during the top of the second inning.
Â
Scott Holzwasser went two-for-four and was also hit by a pitch, joining Walsh and Fair with multiple hits and combining with them to yield six of the squad's eight total base knocks.
Max Burt chimed in with the Huskies' final hit of the night: a rope to shallow center field during the top of the seventh inning.
Â
Texas Tech scored at least one run during each of the game's first seven innings and posted five crooked numbers. The Red Raiders combined to generate 16 hits, but received 18 free passes to first base, including 14 walks.
Â
Tyler Brown began the game on the mound for Northeastern, allowing eight runs on nine hits across four innings. NU freshmen
Owen Batchelder,
Henry Ennen,
Danny Ryan, and
Brandon Dufault brought the Huskies the rest of the way, with Batchelder tossing his first career strikeout and Ryan making his collegiate debut.
Â
Davis Martin started on the hill for the Red Raiders and was responsible for Northeastern's three-run fifth inning, which had reduced the Texas Tech lead to 8-3. He struck out seven NU batters, yet walked four.
Grant Little went three-for-five, scored three runs, and was one of four Texas Tech players to collect three RBIs or more. Zach Rheams capped the Red Raiders' scoring with a seventh-inning grand slam as 11 different players ended up combining to produce the team's 22 runs.
Â
The Huskies stranded 13 runners during the evening, including six during the game's opening three innings.
