Season Statistics
LUBBOCK, Texas – Despite having its fair share of scoring chances, the Northeastern baseball team was unable to drive in the runs to compete with No. 10 Texas Tech during Saturday's doubleheader at Rip Griffin Park as the Huskies lost both games by respective scores of 12-3 and 13-2.
Â
Northeastern (11-8) combined to swing 17 hits during the twin billing, raising the Huskies' series total to 25, which ties for the most hits accumulated against the Red Raiders during a multi-game series this season (No. 5 Kentucky from March 9 to March 11).
Â
However, NU ended up stranding 22 runners during the two-game afternoon, leaving the bags full on three different occasions.
Â
Although Texas Tech (20-5) managed to win game one comfortably, the Huskies maintained their 3-0 deficit during game two through the end of the sixth inning before managing to bring the potential go-ahead run to the plate during the top of the seventh inning. Denying Northeastern, the Red Raiders responded by scoring 10 runs during the final two innings.
GAME ONE
Â
Texas Tech ran out to a 7-0 lead against
Brian Christian during the opening three innings. Gabe Holt provided the two-RBI single that put the Red Raiders ahead, 2-0, during the second inning prior to the home team orchestrating a five-run rally during the bottom of the third.
Â
Scott Holzwasser manufactured the Huskies' first run of the day during the fourth inning, drawing a leadoff walk while strategically advancing during each of Northeastern's next two at-bats, crossing home on
Max Burt's sacrifice fly.
Â
NU trailed Texas Tech, 9-1, heading into the seventh inning, where the Huskies successfully brought eight batters to the plate.
Charlie McConnell cracked an RBI single – the second of his two hits – during the midst of the rally, creating a runners-on-the-corners situation for
Ryan Solomon with one out. Solomon nearly drove home everybody when his arcing fly ball hugged the wrong side of the left field foul pole, but his ensuing strikeout put a kink in the rally, which came to an end with Northeastern scoring just two runs.
Â
The Red Raiders proceeded to match the Huskies' two seventh-inning runs to regain their eight-run edge, later tacking on another insurance run during the eighth.
Â
GAME TWO
Â
Making his first collegiate start during his 26th career appearance,
Brian Rodriguez struck out Zach Rheams to survive a first-inning, bases-loaded jam, but would fall behind, 3-0, during the second inning after Cody Farhat's two-run homer and Brian Klein's RBI double.
Â
Northeastern had its first true chance to chip into the Texas Tech led during the top of the fourth inning.
Jake Farrell poked a leadoff single through the left side and attempted to score on
Max Burt's double down the left field line, despite being thrown out at home on a close play at the plate.
Â
After bringing the tying run to the plate during the fifth and sixth innings, the Huskies loaded the bases with nobody out during the seventh inning.
Cam Walsh had chopped a single over the pitcher's mound before
Michael Geaslen reached safely on a bobbled ball at second base, which had deflected first off Texas Tech reliever Dylan Dusek.
Â
With
Charlie McConnell aboard as well courtesy of a walk,
Mason Koppens grounded a third ball back to the pitcher's mound, which was fielded cleanly by Dusek and thrown home to nab Walsh on the forceout.
Jake Farrell followed by hitting into an infield fly along the third base line, while
Scott Holzwasser was retired on strikes, temporarily preserving the Red Raiders' shutout.
Â
Texas Tech broke the game open with a seven-run seventh inning, featuring a two-run homer by Michael Davis and a three-run home run by Cameron Warren.
Â
NU spoiled the Red Raiders' shutout with two runs during the top of the ninth; Farrell was unintentionally walked with the bases loaded, while Holzwasser ripped an RBI, infield single along the third base line.
