Home runs fly but NU drops finale at No. 10 TTU

Box Score | Season Statistics | Infographic

LUBBOCK, Texas – Ryan Solomon and Jake Farrell teed off on a pair of home runs that accounted for each of the Northeastern baseball team's four runs against No. 10 Texas Tech on Sunday afternoon at Rip Griffin Park, despite NU surrendering four round-trip balls to the ranked Red Raiders during its 9-4, series-finale defeat.

With one swing of the bat, Solomon halved the Huskies' 6-0 deficit during the top of the fourth inning, crushing a three-run blast to left field that scored Farrell and Max Burt. Scott Holzwasser had opened the inning by smoking a leadoff single down the left field line, advancing as far as second base prior to Farrell's four-pitch walk and Burt's fielder's choice – the latter of which nabbed Holzwasser at third base.

Farrell came through with a solo shot to right center during the top of the eighth inning, rounding the bases for his team leading, fourth time to bring the Huskies within five runs (9-4) with five outs yet to be claimed.

Northeastern (11-9) racked up another nine hits against Texas Tech (21-5) on Sunday, but had difficulty competing with the Red Raiders' vigorous power hitting, which churned out four home runs to finish the series with 11.

Sean Mellen entered the day riding a 5-0 record and 1.09 ERA for the Huskies, but fell behind after his very first pitch, which Gabe Holt rode to center field for a solo homer.

Although Mellen would escape the first inning, Michael Davis pegged a leadoff double off the NU lefty to start the second inning, which led to Zach Rheams' two-run homer that upped Texas Tech's edge to 3-0.

Cameron Warren's two-run home run capped a three-run third inning for the Red Raiders, which caused Northeastern to dive into its bullpen. Kyle Murphy relieved Mellen and tossed three and one-third innings of relief, striking out two despite being responsible for Texas Tech's three-run sixth inning.

Andrew Misiaszek struck out two batters and surrendered just one hit during the seventh and eighth innings.

Charlie McConnell went two-for-four out of the Huskies' leadoff spot to record his ninth multi-hit effort of the season.
