KINGSTON, R.I. – Rounding the bases all afternoon long, the Northeastern baseball team won a battle of crooked numbers against Rhode Island, 15-8, on Wednesday at Bill Beck Field to maintain its undefeated status against New England competition (3-0).
Ryan Solomon went three-for-five and led Northeastern (12-9) with five RBIs, respectively capping the Huskies' three-run first inning and six-run fourth inning with a two-RBI single and a three-run homer to dead center.
Surprisingly, Solomon's homer stood as the only extra-base hit during Northeastern's 16-hit day. The Huskies combined to swing 15 singles and capitalized on three Rhode Island errors, scoring during every inning except the third, eighth, and ninth.
More impressively, NU collectively stole nine bags – the most the Huskies have thieved during this decade.
Max Burt and
Mason Koppens joined Solomon in Northeastern's three-hit club. Burt went three-for-four, scored twice, stole a bag, and collected three RBIs, while Koppens went three-for-four, crossed the plate three times, stole three bases, and drove in two.
Charlie McConnell and
Scott Holzwasser each charted two hits and scored two runs apiece as well.
Northeastern jumped out to a 5-0 lead after its first two offensive innings, but surrendered three runs back to the Rams by the end of the third.
The Huskies' six-run fourth inning was triggered by an errant Rhode Island throw on McConnell's infield ball, which allowed Koppens to score from second base.
Zach Perry and Burt continued the rally, chiming in with back-to-back RBI singles before Solomon cracked his third homer of the season to straightaway center.
Rhode Island (6-18) reduced Northeastern's midgame lead from 13-3 to 13-7 courtesy of a four-run sixth inning. NU responded with a two-run seventh inning to put the game out of reach.
The Huskies utilized six arms during its seven-run victory.
Brian Rodriguez started the midweek affair for NU and went on to earn his first winning decision of the season via pitch count, despite only tossing two complete innings.
