AUBURN, Ala. – Despite possessing the best offense in the CAA, the Northeastern baseball team was routinely denied on Friday night by No. 17 Auburn's right-hand ace, Casey Mize, who threw the program's first no-hitter since 2002 as the Huskies were defeated by the ranked Tigers, 6-0, at Plainsman Park.
Â
Mize filled his complete game with 13 strikeouts, facing the minimum number of NU batters during every inning but the fourth, when
Nolan Lang managed to reach safely on Will Holland's errant throw at shortstop. Auburn's junior starter threw 105 pitches, improving his record to 4-0 during the 2018 season while lowering his ERA to 1.57.
Â
Brian Christian struck out four batters during four and one-third innings on the mound for Northeastern (8-4), which witnessed its five-game winning streak come to an end on Friday. Christian was charged with each of the Tigers' six runs, three of which crossed the plate during the bottom of the first inning.
Â
Brian Rodriguez relieved Christian during the bottom of the fifth inning with two runners aboard and successfully worked the Huskies out of the jam, delivering two and two-thirds innings, striking out three while allowing just one hit.
Brandon Dufault faced five batters during his scoreless eighth inning on the hill.
Â
Auburn (14-0) took the lead three batters into its first inning at the plate courtesy of Brendan Venter's two-run homer that scored leadoff second baseman Luke Jarvis. Venter went four-for-four during the game, scoring twice while upping his season batting average to .545.
Â
The Tigers scored two runs off three consecutive doubles to begin the bottom of the fourth inning before extending their lead to 6-0 on Josh Anthony's fifth-inning, RBI groundout to the pitcher's mound.
Friday's game marked the first time that Northeastern had been no-hit since March 2, 2011, when Florida International's Kyle Fitzpatrick did so against the Huskies, facing 28 batters in Miami.
