BROOKLINE, Mass. – Leading William & Mary during the majority of Saturday's CAA game at Friedman Diamond, the Northeastern baseball team broke its eighth-inning tie with the Tribe by staging a two-out rally as the Huskies collected their fourth straight victory in 4-3 fashion.
Â
Northeastern (22-13, 8-3 CAA) exited an eventful first inning by both teams with a 2-1 lead and picked up a meaningful insurance run en route to the eighth inning, where William & Mary (15-25, 3-11 CAA) knotted the game at 3-3 on Zach Pearson's two-RBI single.
Â
With two outs and the bases clear during the home half of the eighth,
Ryan Solomon barreled an infield single to shortstop that came to rest inside Pearson's diving glove at the edge of the outfield turf.
Scott Holzwasser followed with another hard-hit ball to the left side, reaching safely courtesy of David Hograth's errant throw that prolonged the Huskies' rally and allowed for Solomon to take third base.
Â
After Holzwasser had swiped second base for his ninth steal of the season,
Cam Walsh drew a six-pitch walk off Michael Toner, whose relief outing came to an end as the Tribe elected to bring in right-hander Charlie Fletcher. Entering the game as a pinch-hitter,
Kyle Peterson was walked on four straight pitches by Fletcher, yielding NU its eventual winning, unearned run.
Â
Brian Christian struck out six batters, walked none, and was in line for the win upon leaving the game two batters into the seventh inning with runners on the corners. Although
Kyle Murphy would deny William & Mary's bases-loaded opportunity with assistance from the Huskies' inning-ending, 6-4-3 double play, the Tribe rallied for three hits off Murphy during the top of the eighth, the third of which cost Christian the winning decision.
Â
Andrew Misiaszek faced the minimum en route to securing his fifth save of the season, walking Hogarth to begin the ninth inning, yet successfully picking him off between first and second base for the first out.
Â
William & Mary struck first during the opening inning as Hunter Smith's fly ball to right field was obscured by the sun, dropping for a double. Colin Lipke went on to single Smith home during the next at-bat, although Northeastern would respond immediately. After
Ian Fair had extended his hitting streak to 17 games,
Jake Farrell brought Fair home by pelting the game-tying RBI triple through the gap in right center before scoring the run that put NU ahead, 2-1, during
Max Burt's RBI groundout to the left side.
Â
The Huskies plated their third run during the bottom of the sixth inning when the fourth ball of
Ryan Solomon's one-out walk skidded away for a wild pitch, scoring Farrell.
