BROOKLINE, Mass. – Unearned runs and late-inning scoring were the keys to the Northeastern baseball team's doubleheader sweep of Elon on Saturday at Friedman Diamond as the Huskies darted past the Phoenix, 7-1 and 6-5, to move atop the early-season CAA standings.

Northeastern (17-10, 4-1 CAA) plagued Elon (17-14, 4-4 CAA) with seven unearned runs during Saturday's twin-billing, six of which the Huskies scored during the opening game to counter Kyle Brnovich's 10 strikeouts across six and two-thirds innings. The seventh and final unearned run came home during the very last scoring play of the day, when John Mazza broke the second game's 5-5 tie with his eighth-inning, RBI single to right field.

Upon sweeping the doubleheader, NU clinched its first-ever series victory against the Phoenix during its fourth try. The Huskies also improved to 18-1 during their last 19 games at Friedman Diamond.

GAME ONE

Northeastern's aggressive style of base running helped the Huskies claim a 1-0 lead during the bottom of the first inning. With Charlie McConnell aboard at second base, Jake Farrell slapped a well-placed bouncing ball towards the right side for an infield single. During the same play, McConnell decided to test the Elon defense by rounding third base for home, scoring after the Phoenix' catcher had dropped the incoming throw from first base.

Zach Evers brought Elon level at 1-1 during the top of the third inning, driving home Liam O'Regan courtesy of his RBI double down the left field line. The hit and the unearned run went down as the only blemishes on Tyler Brown's six-inning report card, which also featured five strikeouts.

After enduring a stretch of eight consecutive outs against Elon starting pitcher Kyle Brnovich, who had entered Saturday's game with a 4-0 record and 1.53 ERA, the Huskies pounced for two more unearned runs during the fourth inning to grab a 3-1 lead. Max Burt and Farrell capitalized on a passed ball to occupy second and third base, respectively, allowing both runners to score on Ian Fair's two-RBI infield single up the middle.

Brown racked up two of his five strikeouts during the fifth inning but ran into trouble during the sixth, where the Phoenix managed to load the bases. Upon delivering a 2-1 pitch to Joe Satterfield, Brown induced the inning-ending fielder's choice to the left side, where Fair tagged out Ryne Ogren on his way to third base.

Northeastern broke the game open during the bottom of the seventh inning, scoring four runs – three of which were unearned. With John Mazza at second base, Mason Koppens at first base, and no outs, McConnell dropped a sacrifice bunt towards the left side, but reached safely as a result of Satterfield's errant throw to first. Cam Walsh and Farrell each delivered a pair of run-producing sacrifice flies to center field before Burt delivered a two-RBI single through the left side.

Kyle Murphy tied off the Huskies' 7-1 victory with three shutout innings of relief, picking up his fourth save in the process.

GAME TWO

Northeastern received three runs and four hits from its leadoff outfield duo, Charlie McConnell and Cam Walsh, as the Huskies bounced back from a 5-4 deficit to sneak past Elon late, 6-5.

McConnell put the wheels in motion during Northeastern's three-run third inning, doubling to right field as the Huskies' first hit of the ballgame. Despite Mason Koppens holding at third base on McConnell's ninth double of the season, Walsh followed with the first of three RBI infield singles by he, Jake Farrell, and Max Burt that put NU on top early, 3-0.

Elon responded against Brian Christian during the top of the fourth inning, chipping away two runs off the Huskies' lead courtesy of Shawn Blake's RBI single to right field that was coupled with McConnell's errant throw to the plate, which allowed a second run to score.

McConnell redeemed himself by generating the sacrifice fly that upped Northeastern's lead to 4-2 during the bottom of the fourth inning, but the Phoenix replied with the game's tying runs during the fifth. Liam O'Regan ended Christian's outing at four and two-thirds innings upon delivering the game-tying, two-RBI single.

Northeastern fell behind for the first time all afternoon following Zach Evers' RBI single that provided Elon with the 5-4 advantage. However, McConnell would pummel the game-tying home run to right field during the bottom of the seventh inning – one inning before John Mazza capitalized on the Phoenix' preceding outfield error to shuttle the game-winning RBI single to right field.

Andrew Misiaszek sealed the Huskies' one-run win, closing the game with two shutout innings of relief while earning his first winning decision of the season.
