BROOKLINE, Mass. – With sophomore right-hander
David Stiehl scattering two hits across seven shutout innings on Tuesday against UMass Lowell, the Northeastern baseball team made relatively quick work of the River Hawks as the Huskies prevailed, 4-2, polishing off their ninth straight victory.
Â
Firing 90 pitches, Stiehl motored through the visitors, benefitting from two double plays early en route to matching his career highs in both innings pitched (seven) and strikeouts thrown (six). After walking three of the first six batters he opposed, Stiehl closed the door on the second inning with back-to-back strikeouts, stranding the potential tying run at third base during the top of the fifth inning before retiring eight of the final nine batters he faced.
Â
Max Burt, the newest member of the Huskies' 200-hit club, went three-for-four to lead Northeastern (27-13), which improved to 7-0 during its current eight-game home stand. Burt accounted for two of the Huskies' five steals during the afternoon, sharing in the thievery with
Charlie McConnell, who stole one bag to set the NU single-season record (30) and tie Aaron Barbosa for the program's career record (69).
Â
Ian Fair extended his hitting and on-base streaks to 22 and 25 games, respectively, upon ripping a one-out triple down the right field line during the bottom of the first inning. Fair scored with ease on
Jake Farrell's ensuing sacrifice fly to center field as the Huskies provided Stiehl with an early, 1-0 lead.
Â
After UMass Lowell (18-23) had left the game's tying run 90 feet away during the fifth inning, Northeastern took a stab at doubling its lead.
John Mazza lifted a leadoff single into left field before
Mason Koppens turned a sacrifice bunt into an infield hit, inducing an errant throw from Mark Tumosa that provided the Huskies with two runners in scoring position.
Â
McConnell capitalized on the situation, driving a sacrifice fly to left field as Mazza came home to put NU in front, 2-0.
Â
Burt kept the Huskies' bats alive during the sixth inning, poking a leadoff single through the left side and swiping second base before
Zach Perry connected on an RBI single to right field. The NU shortstop came through again during the bottom of the seventh inning, knocking an RBI single to left field that scored Farrell to give the home side the 4-0 advantage.
Â
Kyle Murphy and
Andrew Misiaszek both conceded runs to the River Hawks during the eighth and ninth innings. Misiaszek, who began the ninth inning for Northeastern, stranded the tying UMass Lowell run at the plate to pick up his eighth save of the season.
The Huskies' nine-game winning streak is the longest the program has attained since the 2004 season, when NU won 11 consecutive games.
