BROOKLINE, Mass. – Senior right-hand arm
Brian Christian struck out five UNCW batters en route to earning the victory during his final career start at Friedman Diamond as the Northeastern baseball team salvaged a split of Friday's series-opening doubleheader, winning game two, 7-4, after losing game one, 7-6, in 10 innings.
Â
Christian battled back from a 2-0, first-inning deficit to calmly pitch six and one-third innings, receiving insurance from
Jake Farrell's pair of multi-RBI swings. Farrell tied the game during the bottom of the first inning with his two-run homer that scored
Ian Fair, taking center stage again during the second inning upon driving in three runs with his bases-clearing triple to right field.
Â
Andrew Misiaszek closed game two with a one-two-three ninth inning to lock down his 11th save of the season, tying
Mike Fitzgerald's 2016 campaign for the most during a single season in program history. Misiaszek's 17 career saves are also tied with Dylan Maki for the second most by an NU reliever all-time, trailing Fitzgerald's 21.
Â
By winning Friday's doubleheader finale, Northeastern (31-16, 15-5 CAA) has tied its program record for the most regular-season wins (31), equaling those of its 1991 squad. The Huskies also moved one step closer to clinching a first-round bye in the 2018 CAA tournament and can do so mathematically with a win during Sunday's 1 p.m. Senior Day game.
Â
UNCW (30-19, 12-8 CAA) earned the one-run, extra-inning victory during game one, surviving Northeastern's five-run seventh inning, during which the Huskies took their first lead at 6-5.
Charlie McConnell provided the highlight hit of the inning, singling home
Ryan Solomon and
Cam Walsh with his two-RBI single up the middle that pulled NU within a run at 5-4.
Â
Tyler Brown's 12th start of the season lasted six and one-third innings for the Huskies, although the right-hander managed to record just one strikeout compared to UNCW starter Alex Royalty's five.
Kyle Murphy was on the hill for Cole Weiss' game-tying, RBI double during the top of the eighth inning and was also charged with Levi Gesell's 10th-inning run, which was scored on the Seahawks' game-winning squeeze play.
Â
Max Burt hit his third home run of the season during the bottom of the first inning, evening game one at 1-1 at the time.
