Highlights
BROOKLINE, Mass. – Carrying a 3-0 lead into the eighth inning, the Northeastern baseball team appeared to be in control of Sunday's series finale against UNCW until the Seahawks surprised the Huskies for six runs during the game's final two innings as NU was ultimately defeated, 6-4, during its Senior Day outing at Friedman Diamond.
Â
Northeastern (31-17, 15-6 CAA) received another brilliant start from sophomore left-hander
Sean Mellen, who delivered his second one-hit shutout during as many appearances, striking out nine batters despite walking six.
Â
Senior center fielder
Mason Koppens accounted for two of the Huskies' three run-producing hits, sandwiching RBI singles during the second and fourth innings around
John Mazza's fourth-inning, RBI double.
Â
Cam Walsh opened the Huskies' second inning with a leadoff single against Gage Herring, who surrendered seven of Northeastern's 10 hits and lasted only three and two-thirds innings for UNCW (31-19, 13-8 CAA). Walsh took each of his next two bases on consecutive ground balls to the Seahawks' shortstop, Greg Jones, before Koppens slapped a bouncing ball toward the left side of the infield, too deep for Jones to attempt the inning-ending throw to first.
Â
Max Burt triggered the Huskies' two-run fourth inning, knocking Herring's first pitch of the inning down the left field line for two bases. Arriving at the plate with two outs, Mazza stroked an RBI double through the gap in left center, scoring Burt to increment Northeastern's lead to 2-0.
Â
Koppens proceeded to put Mazza in motion during the Huskies' next at-bat, singling to right field and drawing a throw home, where Mazza slid past the tag to extend the Huskies' advantage to 3-0.
Â
After tossing a one-two-three seventh inning in relief of Mellen,
Brian Rodriguez dealt a one-out strikeout to Jones during the eighth inning, despite Kep Brown continuing the Seahawks' rally with his RBI double to left center that trimmed the NU lead to 3-1.
Â
With
Kyle Murphy on the mound, Cole Weiss unloaded an RBI double to the same location, two batters before UNCW scored the game's tying run as a result of the Huskies' unsuccessful 4-3 putout of Jackson Meadows at first base and the ensuing throw home.
Â
Opposing
Andrew Misiaszek, Zack Canada led off the Seahawks' ninth inning with a double before Ryan Jeffers followed with an immediate, two-run homer to left field.
Â
UNCW would tack on another ninth-inning run off Misiaszek before Northeastern assembled its own late-game rally off Clark Cota.
Â
Charlie McConnell's bunt single led to
Ian Fair's hit by pitch and
Jake Farrell's four-pitch walk, presenting NU with the potential winning run at the plate. After
Zach Perry had driven in McConnell with his RBI groundout to the right side,
Max Burt barreled a line drive toward third base, where Weiss snagged it in the air to end the game.
Before Sunday's series finale, Northeastern honored the seven members of its 2018 senior class (the winningest four-year class in program history):
Max Burt,
Brian Christian,
Mason Koppens,
Nolan Lang,
Kevin Martinis,
Zach Perry, and
Tyler Robinson.
