HARRISONBURG, Va. – For the first time during its conference tenure, the Northeastern baseball team is headed to the CAA championship round as the top-seeded Huskies won Friday's wild and competitive elimination game against second-seeded Elon, 5-4, at James Madison's Eagle Field at Veterans Memorial Park.

Northeastern (35-18) needed two wins on Friday in order to advance to Saturday's championship round and came through during both occasions, defeating fifth-seeded Delaware, 7-2, during the middle game of the session before fighting off the Phoenix during the nightcap.

Upon winning Friday's dramatic finale, the Huskies will now oppose the undefeated No. 4 seed, UNCW, during the league's title round, slated to begin on Saturday at 11 a.m. NU must win two games to claim its first-ever CAA postseason championship, while the Seahawks can win the title with just one victory.

With its win against Elon, Northeastern has tied its program record for the most single-season victories (35), equaling those of the school's 1991 and 1994 squads.

NORTHEASTERN vs. DELAWARE

Facing elimination for the first time at the 2018 CAA tournament, the top-seeded Northeastern baseball team survived its opening game on Friday by defeating fifth-seeded Delaware, 7-2, receiving seven scoreless innings from Tyler Brown and a five-RBI outing by Jake Farrell.

Northeastern took a 1-0 lead during the third inning and held onto it until the seventh inning, when the Huskies tacked on four runs courtesy of three hits. With the bases loaded, Ian Fair delivered the two-RBI single that put NU ahead, 3-0, prior to Farrell knocking the two-RBI, ground-rule double to straightaway center field that cushioned the Huskies' lead to 5-0.

Tyler Brown earned the victory, striking out five batters while scattering six hits across seven innings of work. Brown was charged with both of the Blue Hens' two eighth-inning runs that trimmed Northeastern's lead to 5-2 before Kyle Murphy picked up the game's final six outs.

Farrell re-established the Huskies' five-run edge during the ninth inning, powering a two-run homer to right center - his team leading, 10th of the season.

With the loss, Delaware (31-27) exited the tournament in fourth place.

NORTHEASTERN vs. ELON

Despite James Venuto putting Elon ahead first with his second-inning, two-run homer, Northeastern responded immediately as Scott Holzwasser drilled a two-RBI triple to the deepest part of the ballpark during the top of the third inning, scoring Ian Fair and Jake Farrell.

Brian Christian collected the opening two outs of the fourth inning but could not quiet Cam Devanney, who put the Phoenix back in front, 3-2, by homering down the left field line. Christian lasted two more batters before the Huskies headed into the bullpen to bring in David Stiehl, who tossed three and one-third innings of relief, striking out three.

Unable to chip away at its one-run deficit against Ryan Conroy, who struck out eight batters across seven innings, Northeastern caught a fortunate break during the top of the seventh inning. With runners on first and second and two outs, Farrell's routine fly ball to left field was lost in the lights by Elon left fielder Josh Broughton, falling to the turf for a two-RBI double that gave the Huskies their first lead at 4-3.

The Phoenix charged back during the bottom of the eighth inning as Joe Satterfield opened with a leadoff single. After Ty Adcock had dropped down a sacrifice bunt, Stiehl overthrew Farrell at first base, allowing both Elon runners to advance into scoring position.

With Andrew Misiaszek on the mound, the Phoenix tied the game as Venuto pounded a ground ball to the right side, deep enough to score the equaling run.

Charlie McConnell sparked the Huskies' ninth-inning heroics upon battling back from a 1-2 count to draw a one-out walk against Brandon Justice. After stealing second base, McConnell darted for third base on a wild pitch and came home to score three batters later as Holzwasser knocked the eventual game-winning RBI single to right field.

Elon nearly plated the tying run during a bizarre ninth-inning base running sequence. Aboard at first base after his one-out single, Garrett Stonehouse stole second, but Michael Geaslen's throw down skidded into the outfield. As Stonehouse bolted for third base due to the error, Mason Koppens' incoming throw to third base bounced behind Ryan Solomon, prompting Stonehouse to head for home. From the third base railing, Misiaszek bulleted the ball home to Geaslen, who tagged the leaping Stonehouse for the second out of the inning.

With the loss, Elon (36-23) was eliminated from tournament contention, placing third.
