HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – With
Sean Mellen,
David Stiehl, and
Andrew Misiaszek combining to notch a one-hit shutout against Hofstra on Sunday afternoon, the Northeastern baseball team turned two scoring innings into its 30th victory of the season as the Huskies blanked the Pride, 3-0, clinching their sixth consecutive CAA tournament berth.
Â
Mellen delivered seven dominant innings on the mound for Northeastern (30-14, 14-4 CAA), striking out nine batters while surrendering Hofstra's only hit of the game – a single by Vito Friscia – during the bottom of the first inning. Upon Mellen earning his 10th winning decision of the season (10-1, 1.74 ERA), the sophomore left-hander tied Peter Schultz's 1994 program record for the most single-season victories.
Â
Stiehl kept the Huskies' one-hitter in tact during the eighth inning, receiving a trio of flashy defensive plays to work around a leadoff walk. Misiaszek followed by placing the one-two-three, ninth-inning cap on the ballgame, collecting his 10th save of the year as NU secured its sixth 30-win campaign in program history and second under fourth-year head coach
Mike Glavine (2016).
Â
Sunday marked Northeastern's second one-hitter of the 2018 season.
Tyler Brown (eight innings) and Misiaszek had combined to one-hit William & Mary during the Huskies' 4-0 win on April 20 at Friedman Diamond.
Mason Koppens factored into both of Northeastern's scoring innings on Sunday, recording a sacrifice fly during the top of the second inning and an RBI single during the top of the sixth.
Â
Ryan Solomon opened the Huskies' two-run second inning with a leadoff double through the gap in right center.
Cam Walsh bumped Solomon over to third base with one of his two hits during the afternoon, setting the stage for Koppens to drive a fly ball to the warning track in left field, deep enough to plate Solomon for Northeastern's first run of the day.
Â
After Hofstra (22-18, 11-10 CAA) had decided to swap pitchers and bring in Teddy Cillis, who struck out five batters across six relief innings, Walsh swiped second base, scoring two batters later on
Ian Fair's RBI single up the middle.
Â
Walsh took Cillis' opening pitch of the sixth inning to the body, triggering Northeastern's second rally of the day.
Michael Geaslen bunted Walsh into scoring position, one at-bat before Koppens smoked the RBI single to left field that set the final score at 3-0.
