Highlights
BROOKLINE, Mass. – Countering No. 22 Connecticut's five-run eighth inning with an immediate three-run response on Wednesday at Friedman Diamond, the Northeastern baseball team nearly dug deep enough to overturn its 6-2 deficit to UConn, despite NU coming up a run short during the marquee New England affair and receiving the 6-5 setback.
Â
Jake Farrell's two-RBI single during the bottom of the third inning provided Northeastern (30-15) with a 2-1 lead that the Huskies would maintain deep into the eighth inning, when Connecticut (29-14-1) rallied to score five runs with two outs.
Â
Upon
Andrew Misiaszek relieving
Kyle Murphy with visiting runners on first and second base, Chris Winkel powered the two-RBI double that slid UConn in front, 3-2. Christian Fedko followed with the RBI single that scored Winkel to up Connecticut's lead to 4-2, setting the stage for Conor Moriarty to deliver a two-run homer to left field, upping the visitors' edge to 6-2.
Â
Northeastern caught a fortunate break to open its eighth-inning response as
Max Burt turned a dropped third strike into a free base, advancing courtesy of Zac Susi's errant throw to first. After Burt had moved into scoring position on a passed ball,
Cam Walsh drove a two-out RBI single to center field, trimming the UConn lead down to 6-3 and bringing NU pinch-hitter
Kyle Peterson to the plate.
Â
With a knack for pinch-hit heroics during his sophomore 2018 season, Peterson pummeled a two-run homer to the right field bleachers, energizing the Friedman Diamond crowd while bringing Northeastern within a run at 6-5.
Â
Mason Koppens kept the NU rally alive with a first-pitch double during the next at-bat, forcing UConn to grab its closer, P.J. Poulin, out of the pen. Attacking Poulin,
Charlie McConnell threaded another first-pitch hit through the left side, allowing Northeastern's tying run (Koppens) to occupy third base, where it would remain as
Ian Fair ultimately flew out to right field to end the inning.
Â
Poulin went on to retire NU on five pitches during the bottom of the ninth inning to notch his 13th save of the season.
Â
Northeastern received another solid midweek start out of
David Stiehl, who excelled after surrendering his only run during the first inning. Stiehl struck out five batters across six and one-third innings on the mound, walking two while weathering seven UConn hits.
Â
Koppens led NU with his three-for-four day out of the Huskies' ninth spot in the batting order.
John Mazza also doubled to lead off Northeastern's two-run third inning, which might have featured a grand slam by
Ryan Solomon had it not been for John Toppa's home run-saving catch in left field.
Fair also successfully extended his on-base streak to 30 consecutive games courtesy of his third-inning single.
