BOSTON -- After being named to the 2019 Mike Richter Award Watch List in October, Northeastern men's hockey goaltender
Cayden Primeau has been selected as one of 10 semifinalists for the award, as announced by Let's Play Hockey on Thursday.
The sophomore was a finalist for the award, which is presented annually to the most outstanding goaltender in NCAA Division I men's ice hockey, last year. Voting for the award is conducted by all 60 NCAA Division I men's ice hockey head coaches.
Criteria for the Mike Richter Award:
• Candidates must display outstanding skills on the ice
• Candidates should be in good academic standing at an NCAA college or university
• Consideration should be given to academic achievement and sportsmanship
• Candidates must comply with all NCAA rules; be full-time students at an NCAA college or university; and complete 50 percent or more of the season
• Consideration should be given to the candidate's activities in the community
Primeau has put together a stellar sophomore campaign, posting a record of 21-9-1 between the pipes, tied for second-most wins in the nation and one of only seven netminders with at least 21 wins this season. His 2.12 GAA and .932 save percentage rank fourth and first in the nation, respectively, among goaltenders with at least 30 starts this season. His save percentage also ranks fourth overall among all Division I goaltenders.
Northeastern's chief shot-stopper has filled up the award cabinet this season, earning accolades such as HEA Defensive Player of the Week, HEA Player of the Week, and HEA Goaltender of the Month. Primeau was also awarded with Beanpot Most Valuable Player and his second-straight Eberly Award after saving 59 of the 62 shots he faced over two games, backstopping the Huskies to their second Beanpot Championship in as many years.
Primeau missed three games for the Huskies earlier this season to compete with the United States National Junior Team at the 2019 IIHF World Junior Championship, where the team earned the silver medal after falling to Finland 3-2 in the gold medal game. Primeau turned heads on the national stage and emerged as the team's leading goaltender during the tournament, posting a 4-0-0-1 (W-OTW-OTL-L) record with a 1.61 GAA and .937 save percentage.
The Montreal Canadians prospect will look to help the Huskies continue their success this weekend as they take on sixth-seeded Maine in the Hockey East Quarterfinals at Matthews Arena, starting Friday at 7 p.m.
The five finalists for the award will be announced on Thursday, March 28, and the winner will be revealed on Friday, April 12 at the 2019 NCAA Men's Frozen Four in Buffalo, N.Y.
