INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – With all three of its crews finishing higher than their entry seeds on Sunday, the Northeastern women's rowing team closed the third and final day of the 2019 NCAA Rowing Championships with a trio of strong performances at Eagle Creek Park, placing 19th overall in the Division I team standings.
Â
Making its sixth consecutive appearance at the national championship regatta, Northeastern rowed to 20th place in the varsity eight classification (seeded No. 21), 17th place in the second varsity eight classification (seeded No. 18) and 18th place in the varsity four classification (seeded No. 20).
Â
Aided by a tailwind despite facing choppy water conditions, Northeastern's varsity eight crew began its D final in third place, level with Rhode Island through 250 meters while trailing second-place Marist by two seats. The Huskies quickly made up the ground on second place, pulling within a bow ball of the Red Foxes at 500 meters while maintaining a three-seat interval against the Rams.
Â
Trailing first-place Gonzaga by open water, Northeastern overtook Marist for second place by the race's midpoint, stroking to a half-boat length lead against the two trailing crews with 750 meters remaining. The Huskies extended their advantage to as much as a boat length within the last 500 meters, defeating the Rams by seven seats at the finish line.
Â
Locked in a competitive C final, Northeastern's second varsity crew was in the mix of five overlapping boats through the first 500 meters before sliding four seats back of the leaders into fifth place. With Duke, Iowa and Rutgers each jockeying for second place behind Harvard, the Huskies trimmed their trailing margin to one seat behind the fourth-place Scarlet Knights by the 750-meter marker prior to challenging the fading Hawkeyes.
Â
Passing the 1,250-meter line, Northeastern was five seats behind the three-boat pack of Rutgers, Duke and Iowa. The Huskies rallied to move as close as two seats behind the Hawkeyes with 500 meters to go, despite crossing the finish line one boat length short of fourth place.
Â
Northeastern's varsity four crew chased fourth-place Navy off the dock during its C final, starting six seats behind the Mids and two seats behind Rhode Island. With Navy setting an insistent pace, the Huskies began chipping away at the Rams' fifth-place advantage, overtaking URI by the midway point.
Â
Entering the home stretch, NU rowed within a boat length of the Mids while building a four-seat advantage against Rhode Island after 1,250 meters. The Huskies crossed in fifth place with open water separating them from fourth-place Navy and the sixth-place Rams.
