GREEN BAY, Wis. – With a diverse attack and a strong presence at the service line, the Northeastern women's volleyball team held its own against two challenging season-opening foes, trading four-set results against Green Bay (L, 1-3) and Indiana State (W, 3-1) at the 2019 GBD Invite (hosted by Green Bay).
Â
GREEN BAY def. NORTHEASTERN: 25-16, 26-28, 27-25, 25-23
Pitted against the reigning Horizon League champion, Northeastern overcame a slow start to contest three entertaining, closing sets against Green Bay, winning an extended second set before playing within two points of the Phoenix during the third and fourth sets.
Â
Brianna Daphnis led the Huskies at the net with 10 kills and four blocks while fellow freshman outside hitter
Erica Staunton delivered nine kills, three blocks and an ace during her collegiate debut. Senior libero
Clare Lund paired 20 digs with three assists and two aces.
Â
Northeastern blitzed Green Bay during the second set, rushing out to the 7-1 advantage before the Phoenix made up the ground, drawing level at 9-9. With neither side pulling away by more than two points throughout the remainder of the set, the Huskies received four clutch kills down the stretch from
Natalie Shollin, Staunton (two) and
Liz Carroll to survive one set point and prevail, 28-26.
Â
After NU had charged out to the 8-4 lead during the third set, Green Bay recalibrated its attack, exiting its timeout by winning 10 of the next 11 points. Gabrille Tschannen landed one of her eight kills to knot the set at 17-17, but the Huskies were unable to convert their set point at 24-23 as the Phoenix went on to steal the set, 27-25.
Â
Northeastern powered 15 kills during the fourth set (three more than the Phoenix) – four of which came during the Huskies' string of six unanswered points that tied the score at 21-21. Green Bay gained the two-point separation it needed as Staunton hit into Ashley Sledge and Maddie Yoss' block, allowing the Phoenix to sideout for the win.
NORTHEASTERN def. INDIANA STATE: 25-21, 25-20, 26-28, 25-20
Northeastern started sets well throughout the entirety of its match against Indiana State, charting a 12-4 lead during the first set, a 6-2 edge during the second set and identical 4-0 leads during the third and fourth sets.
Â
Gabrielle Tschannen (13 kills),
Natalie Shollin (10) and
Athena Ardila (10) comprised the Huskies' trio of double-digit kill scorers. Shollin tacked on eight blocks (three solo) and seven digs to her stat line while Tschannen added six blocks as well.
Â
Clare Lund recorded a career high, 23 digs, from the back row.
Samantha Shupe passed 32 assists while
Liz Carroll notched 13 assists, six digs and three service aces.
Â
Relatively unchallenged through two sets, Northeastern landed 15 kills against three attack errors during the third set, building its lead to as large as six points at 23-17. However, the Sycamores successfully erased the gap courtesy of their 6-0 scoring run, negating two NU set points to upend the Huskies, 28-26.
Â
Northeastern rode Tschannen's series of mid-set kills during the fourth set to erase its 15-12 deficit, earning its final lead at 17-16.
