BOSTON – Led by
Natalie Shollin's 12-kill, five-block night and
Samantha Shupe's third double-double of the season (18 assists, 12 digs), the Northeastern women's volleyball team won the latest chapter of its crosstown rivalry against Harvard, downing the Crimson in four sets on Thursday at Cabot Center (25-21, 21-25, 27-25, 25-10).
Â
Shollin hounded the middle for Northeastern (6-5), which picked up its first win against Harvard (2-6) since 2016. The NU senior landed her team high, 12 kills, on 17 attacks (hit .706) and joined
Brianna Daphnis on the key block at 26-25 during the third set that spurred the Huskies' 27-10, match-closing scoring run.
Â
Athena Ardila and
Evelyn Gonzalez racked up 11 kills apiece while
Liz Carroll matched Shupe's 18 assists.
Kayla Martin also provided 11 digs and two aces for the NU cause.
Â
Northeastern broke the first set's 7-7 tie with a 6-1 scoring run, during which the Huskies capitalized on five Harvard errors. Although the Crimson would rally to even the set at 17-17, Shollin followed by single-handedly rejecting Mindie Mabry's middle attack, putting NU in front for the final time.
Â
Harvard leveled the match during the second set that featured 13 tied scores and eight lead changes. After Northeastern had commanded the 17-15 lead, the Crimson rallied to win 10 of the set's final 14 points, navigating around the Huskies' 16 second set kills.
Â
Northeastern's blocking game helped the Huskies undo their 17-13 deficit midway through the third set.
Clare Lund served two aces during the Huskies' string of six straight points that put NU on top, 19-17, yet the Crimson battled back to force four tied scores after 20-20 and earn a set point at 25-24.
Â
Shollin responded by connecting on Northeastern's set-saving kill before meeting Daphnis at the right pin to deliver the momentum-changing block that gave the Huskies' their first set point at 26-25.
After Ardila's set-clinching kill, Northeastern blitzed Harvard during the fourth set, sprinting away to the 17-2 lead en route to pairing 13 kills with eight blocks and two aces (hitting .385).
Evelyn Gray led the Crimson with 13 kills (hit .409) while Mabry and Jaimie Rao delivered 12 kills each. Sandra Zeng recorded the match high, 15 digs.
