SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Coming off Friday's five-set victory against Northern Arizona, the Northeastern women's volleyball team swept its Saturday doubleheader against Binghamton and Seton Hall at Walsh Gymnasium, winning the 2019 Seton Hall Classic with an undefeated, 3-0 record.
NU outside hitters
Brianna Daphnis and
Erica Staunton were both named to the event's All-Tournament Team. Daphnis averaged 3.67 kills per set and hit .458 with four blocks across three matches while Staunton averaged 2.75 kills per set and hit .266, registering five blocks.
NORTHEASTERN def. BINGHAMTON: 25-15, 25-16, 25-17
Northeastern (3-2) dictated the match tempo from the very start, winning a wire-to-wire first set against Binghamton (0-6) before playing to similar success during the second and third sets.

Freshman outside hitter
Erica Staunton paced the Huskies with her career high, 10 kills, committing two errors on 19 attacks (hit .421). Staunton also co-led NU in blocks (three) alongside
Natalie Shollin, who shared the team lead in the category for the first time this season.

Brianna Daphnis landed nine kills against no errors on 13 attacks (hit .692) to aid Northeastern's dominant performance at the net.
Gabrielle Tschannen provided nine kills, too (hitting .438), as NU sported the 37-26 advantage in kills, collectively hitting .315 during the match.

Liz Carroll and
Samantha Shupe tallied 16 and 15 assists, respectively, while
Clare Lund led the NU back row with 21 digs.

After establishing the lead from the opening point, Tschannen went on to notch three kills during Northeastern's early four-point scoring run that put NU in front, 7-2. Three straight Binghamton attack errors allowed the Huskies to cruise to the 12-4 lead, which Northeastern extended to as large as 21-9 before winning the set, 25-15.

Staunton's kill at 5-4 during the second set placed the Huskies in the driver's seat for the final time. Northeastern went on to swing 16 kills against three attack errors during the second set (hitting .415), compiling a seven-point run to build the commanding, 17-7 lead and take a two-set advantage.

Early third set aces by Shupe and
Nicole Magbanua allowed Northeastern to race to the 6-2 lead, which the Huskies would soon double to 12-4. NU executed three of its five blocks during the third set, motoring to the 17-7 lead before winning the match, 25-17.

Swinging 62 kills against 12 attack errors and hitting .313, Northeastern (4-2) overpowered Seton Hall (1-6) at the net, comfortably pulling away from the Pirates during the first, third and fourth sets.

NU rookies
Erica Staunton and
Evelyn Gonzalez both set career highs with 15 and 12 kills, respectively.
Brianna Daphnis matched Staunton for the team lead at 15 kills, committing one error on 34 attacks to hit .412 during the match.

Natalie Shollin paired eight kills with two blocks while
Nailah Jenkins notched four blocks, including two solo blocks.
Clare Lund upped her career digs high to 29, passing seven assists behind teammates
Liz Carroll (25 assists) and
Samantha Shupe (23).

Northeastern dug itself out of a 10-8 deficit during the first set as Daphnis landed two kills around three Seton Hall attack errors, putting the Huskies in front, 13-10. Shortly after,
Gabrielle Tschannen landed consecutive kills during the four-point NU run that widened Northeastern's command to 19-13 as the Huskies rode their 17 kills to the 25-17 victory.

Similar to the opening set, Northeastern erased its 10-8 deficit by winning seven of the next eight points to take the 15-11 lead. Despite falling behind late, Staunton hammered two kills to fend off the Pirates' two set points at 24-22, but Haylee Gasser responded with the two set-clinching kills that allowed Seton Hall to level the match.

Northeastern combined to swing 15 kills against one error during the third set (hit .467), racing out to the 11-4 lead before winning 12 of the set's final 15 points.

Locked in a tie at 6-6 during the fourth set, Gonzalez and Daphnis combined to drill four straight kills for the Huskies, putting NU on top for the final time. Northeastern turned in a five-point run while sprinting to the 19-11 lead, firing 15 kills in total to hold off the Pirates.
