CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – One month away from making his collegiate debut for the Northeastern baseball team, freshman pitcher
Sebastian Keane has been named among the nation's Top 50 College Freshmen, as revealed on Thursday by
Perfect Game's Vinnie Cervino and Brian Sakowski.
Keane earned the No. 43 ranking on Cervino and Sakowski's big board, which projects the top 50 NCAA Division I freshmen that will comprise the 2022 MLB Draft class. Florida pitcher Hunter Barco topped the
Perfect Game list while six other SEC rookies cracked the outlet's top 10.
A native of North Andover, Massachusetts, Keane threw to the tune of a 21-5 pitching record and a 0.66 ERA across his four seasons at North Andover High School, where he set school records in career strikeouts (272) and single-season wins (11). The two-year captain was a key contributor on both sides of the ball during the Scarlet Knights' title run at the 2019 MIAA Division IA "Super Eight" Baseball Championship, garnering tournament Most Valuable Player honors after helping North Andover hoist its first-ever crown.
Keane's exemplary senior season merited him a myriad of national and statewide recognition, most notably as the 2019 Gatorade Massachusetts Player of the Year. At the 2019 MLB Draft, he was chosen during the 11th round by the Boston Red Sox (347th overall), but forwent his pro opportunity, becoming the first Northeastern freshman to honor his collegiate commitment post-draft.
With Keane in its pitching arsenal, the Huskies will begin their 2020 centennial season on Friday, Feb. 14, when NU opens a three-game series at Alabama. Northeastern's four all-time wins against the SEC have occurred during the last two seasons under the leadership of sixth-year head coach
Mike Glavine.
