COLANGELOÂ REACTION
BOSTON -Â Northeastern's
Sam Colangelo,
Gunnarwolfe Fontaine and
Devon Levi were all selected Wednesday in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft. Colangelo was taken 36th overall by the Anaheim Ducks, while Fontaine was taken by the Nashville Predators and Levi was picked by the Florida Panthers, both in the seventh round.
"We're extremely proud and happy for them," Fernie Flaman Head Men's Hockey Coach
Jim Madigan said. "It's a reward for their hard work they and their family put in for all those years. I'm excited to continue to work with them and helping them realize their goals and aspirations to reach the next level."
Colangelo was drafted by the Ducks in the second round and was the first Hockey East player selected. The Stoneham, Mass., native became the fourth Husky to be selected in the second round and is the 18th to be selected in the draft during the
Jim Madigan era. It is the first time in Northeastern history with back-to-back years of second-round selections (
Jayden Struble, 46th pick to the Montreal Canadiens).
"This is a dream come true," Colangelo said. "I've been dreaming of this my whole life. I wouldn't be here without my parents and family. IÂ couldn't be happier to be a part of the Ducks."
Â
Prior to joining Northeastern, the 6-foot-2 freshman notched 31 goals and 30 assists in 55 games over two seasons with the Chicago Steel of the USHL, tallying 58 points last year alone.
Along with Jayden Struble, Colangelo was invited to the 2020 World Junior Summer Showcase, which was later canceled due to COVID-19 and both were also invited to the
2021 U.S. National Junior Team Evaluation Camp at USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth, Michigan being held later this week. Colangelo also played in the 2020 BioSteel All-American game at USA Hockey Arena.
Fontaine was selected 202nd overall by the Predators. The Rhode Island native played the last two seasons with the USHL Chicago Steel as a teammate of Colangelo and tallied 46 goals and 54 assists in 105 games. He ranked fifth his final season in the USHL in goals, goals per game and points and ended his career second in all-time goals for the Chicago Steel while helping lead them to the 2019 USHL Eastern Conference Championship. He also played in the 2020 Biosteel All-American Game and his sister
Skylar Fontaine is a star defenseman on the Northeastern women's hockey team. The person in charge of making the pick is Northeastern alum David Poile who has been general manager of the Predators since 1997.
Levi was taken 212th overall by the Panthers. The Quebec native played for the CCHL Carleton Place Canadians in 2019-20 and led the league with a 1.47 GAA, and a .941 save percentage, while earning eight shutouts in 37 games and helping the Canadians to first place. He was named the league's Player of the Year, Top Goalie, Top Rookie, Top Prospect and was named to the CCHL All-Star first team. He played in the 2020 CJHL Top Prospects Game, the 2019 CCHL All-Star Game and for Team Canada East in the 2019 World Junior A Challenge (WJAC) Tournament and earned MVP honors while leading them to the silver medal.
This is the third consecutive season that multiple Northeastern players have been drafted, and seventh straight season with a player being selected in the NHL Draft.
