EDMONTON - Northeastern's Sam Colangelo and Devon Levi had some strong showings in the 2021 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Junior Championships. Colangelo helped Team USA to the gold medal and is the first Northeastern player to win gold. Levi led Team Canada to the silver medal.
Northeastern is one of only three schools, along with Boston College and Wisconsin, to have players on each team in the championship game.
Levi was the first collegiate goalie to ever win three or more games (six wins) or even play in three or more games for Team Canada while starting all seven games. He is also the first current Northeastern player to play for Team Canada. In addition, Levi left as the second Canadian goalie in history to record three shutouts in a single tournament which also ties the tournament record. Levi's remarkable performance is seen through his Team Canada record breaking .964 Save pct. and 0.75 GAA. He was also named a World Juniors All-Star and Best Goaltender.
The Dollard-des-Ormeaux, Quebec native fits the theme of this unexpected year at World Juniors as Levi becomes the third goalie in 40 years of Canadian junior teams to not come from one of the country's three major junior leagues.
Colangelo scored his first goal of the tournament against Austria with an 11-0 win on his birthday.
The Stoneham, Mass. native is heading into his freshman year with the Huskies and was selected 36th overall in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft by the Anaheim Ducks (story). The forward played 55 games for the USHL Chicago Steel the last two seasons putting up 31 goals and 30 assists including 58 points last season alone.
