FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Northeastern Huskies (2-2) picked up its second win of the season in dramatic fashion as they defeated the Minnesota Gophers (2-3) by a score of 8-7 at JetBlue Park.
Down by 4-1 in the fifth inning, the Huskies tied the game at 4-4, took the lead in the sixth, and traded runs back and forth with the Gophers until the bottom of the eighth where
Justin Bosland stole home on a pickle play and
Tyler MacGregor hit a single down the right field line to score
Mike Sirota for the insurance run. The Gophers were primed to tie the game again in the top of the ninth but reliever
Charlie Walker got out of the jam with an infield fly and ground out, both to third baseman
Jack Doyle, for his first win of the season. The Husky bullpen got 3.2 strong innings from
Will Jones, who kept the game within reach for the NU offense.
Bosland finished the day 2-for-3 with three runs scored (a new career-high), a triple and double to his name, and three stolen bags. MacGregor also notched a triple in his 3-for-5 day, adding an RBI and a run scored.
- The Gophers got on the board first with a three-run second inning.
- Northeastern chipped into the lead in the bottom of the third when Bosland took off for third on a double steal – the throw to second base was high and Bosland took home on the error.
- After a Minnesota leadoff solo home run in the fourth, the Huskies rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth on three hits and an error.
- The scoring started when the Huskies loaded the bases and MacGregor hit a slow infield grounder – the late throw missed the bag and allowed Bosland to score again from third, and Luke Beckstein to score from second.
- On the ensuing at bat, Alex Lane drilled a single into left field, scoring Sirota to tie the game at 4-4.
- The Huskies took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI ground out to Beckstein, scoring Cam Maldonado who reached on a full-count double. Maldonado scored from third on Beckstein's ground out after stealing third.
- Minnesota tied the game up at 5-5 in the top of the seventh, and MacGregor responded with a leadoff triple in the bottom of the frame, scoring on a sacrifice fly by Lane.
- After another tie game in the eighth from a Minnesota RBI double, the Huskies took the lead for good in the bottom of the inning.
- A leadoff double to Bosland set the tone, and the sacrifice bunt by Beckstein advanced him to third. After Mike Sirota took three pitches outside and then was intentionally walked, he took an early jump to steal second, and on the ensuing pickle play, Bosland stole home for the go-ahead run, beating the throw home.
- Sirota would make it to second on the play and score on a Tyler MacGregor RBI single down the line.
- Despite a late run in a bases-loaded situation, reliever Charlie Walker got out of the jam and earned the win after working 1.1 innings and allowing just the one run.
- Middle reliever Will Jones kept the Gophers at bay after a 4-1 lead, working 3.2 innings allowing just one earned run on three hits and a walk. He struck out four batters on the afternoon.
- Northeastern starting pitcher Dennis Colleran worked the opening four innings, notching three strikeouts with no walks.
- Both wins for the Huskies this season have been late-inning ties, as their first win came with a tie game in the ninth at Arizona.
The two teams are back at it on Sunday, February 25 at 1:05 p.m. – Minnesota will host the Huskies at Hammond Stadium at Lee Health Sports Complex as the home team.
