KINGSTON, R.I. – In a Saturday double header at Bill Beck Field, Northeastern University (12-5) and the University of Rhode Island (3-12) shared the spoils, with the Rams winning game one 7-1, and the Huskies taking the series with the win in game two, 11-9.
The Huskies were unable to get much going on offense in game one with only one run on four hits.
Alex Lane continued his hitting streak, notching two in the first game.
In game two the Huskies overcame an early 4-0 deficit, scoring 11 runs in innings four through eight to finally take the lead in the eighth. Lane once again notched two hits in the contest, both doubles, along with
Harrison Feinberg who hit home runs in back-to-back innings in the Huskies' rally.
Justin Bosland also notched a two-hit performance with three RBIs in the win.
GAME 1 – NU 1, URI 7
- Rhode Island jumped out to an early lead plating one run in the first, two in the second, and one more each in the third and fourth to lead 5-0.
- Northeastern finally spoiled the shutout in the top of the sixth on a two-out double by Mike Sirota followed by an RBI single by Alex Lane.
- After the Huskies held URI off the scoreboard in the fifth and sixth, the Rams plated two more in the seventh to extend the lead to 7-1.
- Starting pitcher Wyatt Scotti worked the opening three innings, allowing just three earned runs on six hits – he walked one and struck out one.
- Working the following 3.1 innings was Will Jones, who was able to provide the first two shutout innings of the day for Northeastern in the fifth and sixth. He allowed three earned runs on six hits and a walk, striking out two.
- Finishing the game on the mound was Aiven Cabral, working 1.2 innings and allowing no runs on two hits. He struck out the first batter he faced in his outing.
- It's the first time since the March 2nd loss at Mercer that Northeastern had been held to under five runs in a game.
GAME 2 – NU 11, URI 9
- Rhode Island began game two with two pick-offs in the away half of the first, and a four-run bottom of the first to lead 4-0.
- The Huskies chipped away at the lead with a two-out RBI double by Justin Bosland in the fourth inning, but the Huskies were unable to tally more despite loading the bases two batters later.
- The Huskies got a huge shutdown inning from Jack Bowery in the bottom of the fourth on 1-2-3 inning after the Huskies cut the lead in half. He finished the day after working 4.0 innings, allowing two runs on three hits, no walks, and collecting five strikeouts.
- In the fifth, Jack Goodman hit a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to score Beckstein and cut the lead to one run, but two solo shots by URI in the bottom of the inning put the lead up 6-3.
- The Huskies tied the game in the top of the sixth on a two-run homer from Harrison Feinberg and an RBI fielder's choice by Mike Sirota, scoring Luke Beckstein.
- URI put those three runs back up on the board in the bottom of the inning on an RBI double and a two-run homer to lead 9-6.
- Feinberg once again responded in the seventh inning with a three-run home right to right-center field to tie the game up at 9-9.
- It was Cooper McGrath in the seventh blanking URI, striking out the first two batters of the inning and getting a fly out.
- The Huskies took their first lead of the day in the top of the ninth – after a walk to Sirota and a double by MacGregor, Jack Goodman hit an RBI single to score Sirota to lead 10-9.
- With two outs, Goodman stole second and was driven in by Bosland on another RBI single to extend the lead to two runs.
- McGrath ended the day with the win, working two full innings allowing no hits or runs, with one walk and two strikeouts.
- Jack Beauchesne came on for the save in the ninth and got a pair of strikeouts and a ground-out for his first save of the season.
- It's the third win of the season for Northeastern when trailing at the end of the sixth inning.
Northeastern plays two local midweek contests next Tuesday and Wednesday, March 19
th and 20
th at Boston College and home against Merrimack, before beginning conference play next Friday afternoon at Hofstra.
