Huskies Outrun Hofstra, Take Series 2-1

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – In the final game of their three-game series, the Northeastern Huskies (16-6, 2-1 CAA) took down the Hofstra Pride (7-15, 1-2 CAA) by a score of 13-5 on Sunday afternoon at University Field.

The Huskies took advantage of 17 free bases between 11 walks and six hit-by-pitches, and belted another 10 hits in the contest. Offensively the Huskies got multiple hits out of lead off hitter Luke Beckstein (2-for-3, 2 RBI), Mike Sirota (2-for-5, RBI) and Alex Lane (2-for-3, 2B, 2 RBI), with Carmelo Musacchia adding another two RBIs in the contest.

Starting pitcher Wyatt Scotti worked six innings, earning his fourth win of the season, and the 22nd of his Northeastern career. Aiven Cabral earned a save in his second consecutive appearance, pitching the final three innings.

  • Northeastern hung a crooked number in the first tallying five runs on three hits, two hit-by-pitches, and a walk. After lead off hitter Luke Beckstein got aboard via HBP, three straight hits from Tyler MacGregor, Mike Sirota, and Alex Lane tallied the first three runs of the ballgame.
  • Lane scored after taking third on a wild pitch and scoring two batters later on another wild pitch. Justin Bosland advanced to third on that wild pitch, after getting plunked and stealing second. Bosland was then scored on a sac-fly by Carmelo Mussachia to make it 5-0.
  • The Pride plated one in the bottom of the inning on two hits to cut the lead down to 5-1.
  • Northeastern added that run back in the second, loading the bases before Beckstein scored on a wild pitch for the 6-1 lead.
  • The Huskies tacked on another in the third when Cam Maldonado walked on a full count, stole second, took third on a balk, and ran home on a wild pitch to make it 7-1.
  • Hofstra notched its first extra-base-hit and multi-run inning in the third, cutting the lead down to 7-3 on a two-RBI double.
  • The Huskies needed just one hit to tally four more runs in the fourth inning – a pair of bases-loaded walks and an RBI single from Gregory Bozzo, along with a sac-fly from Beckstein made it 11-3.
  • Northeastern loaded the bases again in the fifth on two singles and a walk, and a sac-fly from Bosland scored Sirota for the 12-3 lead.
  • The Huskies were one out away from another scoreless inning in the fifth but a two-out, two-run home run made it 12-5.
  • Wyatt Scotti posted his third shutout inning of the game as he finished the sixth, working a quick 1-2-3 inning with his third strikeout of the day. He left the game with a 12-5 lead, allowing seven hits, one walk, and three strikeouts.
  • Northeastern notched a 13th run in the eighth on an RBI single from Beckstein, scoring Maldonado from second after his two-out double.
  • Out of the bullpen, Aiven Cabral finished the game with his second straight save – he allowed just one hit in the final three innings, no runs or walks, and struck out four.
  • The Huskies win their first CAA series of the season for the first time since April of 2021 when the Huskies swept Hofstra on the road, 3-0.
  • Northeastern wins its fourth straight three-game weekend series, defeating Mercer, ODU, Rhode Island, and now Hofstra all by 2-1 margins.

The Huskies return to New England to face Central Connecticut at home on Tuesday, March 26th and UConn on the road on Wednesday, March 27th. Northeastern hosts its first home weekend series beginning next Friday, March 29th against Monmouth.
