BOSTON - The Northeastern University baseball team (21-6) hosts the University of Massachusetts (8-14) at Friedman Diamond this Tuesday, April 2nd to kick off the 2024 Baseball Beanpot. First pitch is scheduled for 2:35 p.m. on FloBaseball.
THREE THINGS TO KNOW:
1. LAST TIME OUT:
Northeastern is coming off a three-game weekend sweep of CAA foe Monmouth, outscoring the Hawks 28-6 over the course of the weekend. The offense belted a season-high 19 hits on Friday afternoon, and the pitching staff allowed just four earned runs the entire weekend. The Huskies are now 5-1 in conference play as they head to Towson next weekend. Left fielder
Alex Lane was named the CAA Player of the Week after belting in 12 more RBIs last week to lead the CAA at 46 on the year.
2. PLAYING FOR BEANS:
Since the resumption of the Baseball Beanpot after 2021, the Huskies have finished third place in both tournaments (2022, 2023) defeating Harvard in the consolation game in 2022 and UMass in 2023. The Huskies are looking for their first Baseball Beanpot championship game appearance since 2018, and their first title since 2013. Alongside this matchup, Boston College with travel to Harvard on Tuesday afternoon.
3. ABOUT THE MINUTEMEN:
UMass comes into the 2024 Baseball Beanpot after taking one of three games at Virginia Commonwealth in A10 play. The Minutemen grabbed a win over a CAA opponent, Elon, earlier this year, along with a ranked win at #13 Virginia, 10-5 in their second weekend of play. The last time the Huskies and Minutemen met was the 2023 Baseball Beanpot consolation, with the Huskies winning a shootout, 18-11 in Amherst.
Cam Maldonado hit the first cycle in modern program history, posting a five-hit day as the Huskies took third place in the tournament.
After this short midweek slate, the Huskies head back on the road for three games at Towson for CAA weekend number three. The Huskies return to Boston for the 2024 Baseball Beanpot second round next Tuesday, April 9. They will face either Harvard or Boston College - all second round games will be hosted at Harrington Athletics Village in Brighton.
