NEWARK, Del. – In game three of the weekend set, the Northeastern Huskies (27-8, 9-3 CAA) suffered just their third CAA loss of the season, failing to sweep the Delaware Blue Hens (18-16, 6-6 CAA) on Sunday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium, falling by a score of 14-11.
- Northeastern struck first, plating two runs in the opening frame. After back-to-back hits by Luke Beckstein and Tyler MacGregor, a walk to Mike Sirota loaded the bases.
- Jack Goodman hit an RBI single to the gap in shallow right-center, allowing Beckstein and MacGregor to score for the early 2-0 lead.
- A pair of solo home runs in the first and third innings tied the game for Delaware.
- With two outs in the top of the fourth inning, Carmelo Musacchia and Gregory Bozzo hit back-to-back solo home runs to regain and extend the lead to 4-2.
- Delaware grabbed another solo home run in the fourth, and back to back homers in the fifth gave Delaware a 7-4 lead.
- The Huskies loaded the bases in the top of the sixth but were unable to cut into the deficit, and another three solo homers for the Hens in the bottom of the inning extended the lead to six runs, leading 10-4.
- Northeastern once again loaded the bases in the seventh, and were able to score the runner from third on a double play, but were held to just the one run. The Hens tacked that run back on in the bottom of the frame with another solo homer with two outs.
- The Huskies were finally able to break through in the top of the eighth, batting around and scoring four runs on three hits & four walks, but stranding the bases loaded down 11-9.
- The Hens responded with another home run in the bottom of the eighth to re-extend the lead to 14-9.
- An RBI ground out from MacGregor, scoring pinch-hitter Jimmy Sullivan, and a solo two-out home run by Alex Lane cut back into the deficit, but the Huskies were unable to complete the comeback.
- It was Northeastern's first loss of the season when scoring 10 or more runs.
Northeastern begins a seven-game home stand next Wednesday, April 17 at 2 p.m. as the Huskies host the Kansas State Wildcats at Friedman Diamond. All Northeastern home games will stream on FloBaseball.
