BROOKLINE, Mass. – Despite erasing a six-run deficit in the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings, Northeastern (27-9) fell to Kansas State (22-14) in extra innings by a final score of 9-8 on Wednesday afternoon at Friedman Diamond.
The Huskies found themselves down seven runs in the fifth inning, but began clawing back with a run in each of the sixth and seventh innings. After four runs in the eighth and two in the ninth, the Huskies forced extra innings, but fell to the Wildcats in the 11
th.
- The Wildcats struck first in the top of the first with a one-out solo shot to right field, and added two more in the second on an RBI single.
- Another home run for KState in the third, along with a pair of wild pitches in the fifth had the Wildcats up 7-0 after five.
- The Huskies answered back with one run in each of the sixth and seventh innings, a solo home run for Jack Doyle followed by an RBI double for Mike Sirota, to cut into the deficit, 7-2.
- Kansas State put up another run in the top of the eighth to extend the lead to 8-1 on an RBI single up the middle.
- The Huskies surged for four runs in the eighth, loading the bases on three straight HBPs and clearing them on a throwing error to trying to catch Carmelo Musacchia out at first base. Musacchia made it to third on the error and was hit home by Luke Beckstein. The Huskies went into the ninth inning down by just two runs.
- Northeastern got a big scoreless top of the ninth from Dennis Colleran, notching a strike out to keep the game within reach.
- In the bottom of the ninth, a two-RBI bloop single to right field by Carmelo Musacchia tied the game, scoring Jack Goodman and Cam Maldonado, forcing extra innings.
- The Huskies got a 1-2-3 inning out of Jack Beauchesne in the 10th, but were also retired 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning.
- Kansas State got the go-ahead run in the top of the 11th, after a lead off single, a sac bunt, and a ground out placed a runner on third, who then scored on a wild pitch.
- It's Northeastern's first home loss of the season, and first two-game losing streak on the season. The Huskies are now 1-1 in extra inning games in 2024.
The Huskies stay home to host the UNCW Seahawks this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, April 19-21. All three games will stream on FloBaseball, and Friday's game will be simulcast on NESN.
