BOSTON - The Northeastern University baseball team (24-7) faces off with Boston College (17-13) on Tuesday evening at 5 p.m. for the Baseball Beanpot Championship at Harrington Athletics Village. The game will follow the consolation game between UMass and Harvard in Brighton, beginning at 1 p.m.
THREE THINGS TO KNOW:
1. BACK TO BRIGHTON
- Northeastern will face off with Boston College for the second time this season at Harrington Athletics Village, after taking a midweek contest with the Eagles by a score of 10-6 last month. Michael Gemma struck out a career-high eight batters in his four-inning start, Charlie Walker earned his second relief win of the season, and Aiven Cabral got the save out of the bullpen working four innings, with just one run allowed. Offensively, Tyler MacGregor had a 3-for-6 day with two doubles and an RBI, Luke Beckstein chipped in with two doubles and two RBIs, and the duo of Gregory Bozzo and Alex Lane each left the yard with a home run.
2. ABOUT THE BASEBALL BEANPOT
- The 33rd Basebal Beanpot will feature the first meeting of BC and Northeastern in the championship game since the 2016 season.
- Northeastern is making its first championship appearance since 2018, in which they lost to Harvard in Brighton, 8-6.
- NU is seeking its first Baseball Beanpot title since 2013, when they defeated UMass at Fenway Park by a score of 6-3.
- The Huskies are also seeking their first win over BC in the tournament since 2014, where they won 4-3 in the consolation round. Northeastern has a 6-16 all-time record against BC in the tournament.
3. HOW WE GOT HERE
- Northeastern defeated UMass last Tuesday, April 2 at Friedman Diamond by a score of 12-1 in seven innings. The Huskies outscored the Minutemen 6-1 in the opening three innings before pulling away with a six-run fifth inning, featuring RBI base hits from Alex Lane, Jack Doyle, and Harrison Feinberg, and a bases-loaded walk RBI from Jack Goodman.
- The Eagles traveled to Cambridge last Tuesday and took down Harvard 17-9 in a back-and-forth contest. The Crimson overcame a four-run deficit in the third to tie the game, and rallied from a six-run deficit in the sixth to bring the scoreline with one, but the Eagles ran away with it in the seventh and eighth innings with seven unanswered runs. Eighth inning RBIs came from Nick Wang, Vince Cimini, and Nate McHugh.
After wrapping up the in-season tournament, the Huskies head back on the road for another CAA series away from home, facing the Delaware Blue Hens in a three-game series beginning Friday, April 12.
