MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – In the series finale on Sunday afternoon, Northeastern (34-15, 15-9 CAA) fell to the College of Charleston (36-12, 18-5 CAA) by a score of 6-3 at Patriots Point.
Both teams' defenses settled in and posted scoreless innings until the fifth, where the Huskies opened the scoring and took a 3-0 lead heading to the eighth. The Cougars rallied for six runs in the bottom of the eighth to take the series.
- Neither side got any runs across until the fifth inning – for Northeastern, Michael Gemma worked the opening two innings allowing no runs on two hits and three walks, striking out two batters on the day. He was relieved by Dennis Colleran in the third.
- The Huskies broke the scoreless tie in the top of the fifth – a leadoff double by Ryan Gerety got things started, and then a sacrifice bunt from the next batter, Gregory Bozzo, sent him to third. Gerety would score on an infield ground out RBI by Cam Maldonado to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead.
- With two outs in the sixth, Alex Lane hammered a 1-2 count far over the left field wall to lead 2-0.
- Gerety scored another run in the seventh as he reached on a fielding error, ran from first to third on a ground out, and scored on a sac-fly from Cam Maldonado.
- Dennis Colleran posted a new career high in innings pitched with five, and strike outs with six, and he worked near-perfect from the third to the seventh – he entered the game in the third inning with two runners on and no outs, and quickly retired the side stranding the runners. He made it to the eighth inning allowing just one runner on an error.
- Charleston plated six runs on four hits in the bottom of the eighth to erase a three-run Northeastern lead and create a three-run lead of their own heading into the final inning.
The Huskies are back in action on Tuesday, May 14
th in Lowell, Massachusetts facing UMass Lowell at Lelacheur Park at 3 p.m. Northeastern returns home the following Thursday, May 16 for a three-game series with Stony Brook to end the regular season.
