BOSTON -- Fresh off a huge 3-1 weekend in Baton Rouge, the Northeastern University baseball team (3-6) heads to Long Island this weekend to open Coastal Athletic Association play at Stony Brook (1-9) in a three-game series at Joe Nathan Field. First pitch on Friday is set for 2 p.m., with Saturday's game also at 2 p.m. and Sunday's series finale at 1 p.m. All three games will be streamed on FloCollege.
THREE THINGS TO KNOW:
- DOWN GO THE TIGERS: Monday night in Baton Rouge will go down as one of the most memorable in Northeastern baseball history. The Huskies stunned #2 Louisiana State University 13-10 at Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field, marking the highest-ranked opponent Northeastern has ever defeated and the program's first win over a top-10 team since 2022. The Huskies jumped on the defending national champions early, scoring four runs in the second inning and six more in the third to build a 10-0 lead. Every player in the starting lineup recorded a hit — Harrison Feinberg led the way going 3-for-6 with three RBI, while Chris Walsh delivered four RBI, including a three-run home run. Ryan Griffin earned the win in his first career start, holding LSU to just two runs on four hits through 5.1 innings. The Tigers mounted a late rally, scoring eight runs across the final three frames, but the Huskies' early offensive explosion proved to be too much.
- BOUNCE BACK: The win over LSU capped a 3-1 weekend in Baton Rouge that saw the Huskies find their footing. Northeastern opened the trip with a 4-1 victory over Grambling State on Friday before dropping a close 3-1 contest to #2 LSU on Saturday. The Huskies responded with a dominant 10-0 shutout of Grambling State on Sunday — a game in which starter Andrew Wertz tossed five scoreless innings and Andrew Basel retired all nine batters he faced in relief — before the historic Monday night upset. Feinberg homered twice and stole six bases on the weekend, while Cooper Tarantino launched a home run in the Sunday shutout.
- SCOUTING THE SEAWOLVES: The three-game series marks the opening weekend of CAA play for both teams, and the continuation of a rivalry that dates back to the two programs' shared time in the America East Conference before both moved to the CAA. The Seawolves enter the weekend at 1-9 under first-year head coach Jim Martin, who took over for legendary 35-year skipper Matt Senk following his retirement after the 2025 season. Stony Brook has faced a grueling non-conference schedule to open 2026, with road series at Arkansas State, Georgia Tech, and FIU before returning home to Joe Nathan Field for a midweek win over Fordham. The Seawolves went 25-27 overall and 11-16 in CAA play a season ago. Stony Brook's 2026 non-conference slate features three NCAA Tournament participants from a year ago (Georgia Tech, Fairfield, Columbia), as well as the Huskies in conference play for a total of four former tourney teams.
