After scoring five unearned runs in the first inning and leading 8-0 after two, Northeastern held on for a 10-8 win over Bentley College in non-conference baseball action Thursday afternoon at DeFelice Field in Waltham.
It was a sloppily played game, with 13 of the 18 runs unearned as the two clubs combined for nine errors (five by Northeastern). Northeastern, 11-4 in its last 15 games, improved to 24-17 while Bentley slipped back under .500 to 22-23.
All five Husky runs in the first inning were scored after two were out. Following a Falcon error that allowed the first run to score, freshman right fielder Jeff Heriot had a two-run double to right-center. Second baseman Erik Hagstrom and DH Colin Gaynor made it three consecutive two-baggers, with each driving in one. Freshman first baseman Miguel Paquette capped a three-run second inning when he homered to right with one aboard, and all of a sudden, Northeastern had an 8-0 lead. It was Paquette's team-leading seventh homer of the season.
Bentley took advantage of three NU miscues to score twice in the fourth, cutting the lead to 8-2. Two innings later, the Falcons struck for three more to draw within four, 9-5. Senior third baseman Bernie Driscoll had an RBI double and senior DH Myles Dudley a two-run single.
The Falcons put another three-spot on the scoreboard in the seventh. Junior left fielder Jamie Gath had an RBI double, and seniors Kevin Lyons and Jamie Saccardo followed with sacrifice flies, and quickly it was a one-run game, 9-8.
A walk to Driscoll and a single by senior rightfielder Steve Vickers gave Bentley runners on the corners, but sophomore righthander Justin Hedrick came in from the bullpen for an inning-ending strikeout of Dudley.
Northeastern picked up an insurance run in the eighth on an infield single by junior shortstop Omar Pena, an error on an attempted steal, a fly ball to right and a sacrifice fly by senior Ben Beck.
After Saccardo led off the ninth with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch, Hedrick (2 1/3 scoreless innings) retired the next three Falcon hitters to record his first save of the year. Sophomore Matt Pileski earned the win for NU after allowing six hits and five runs (only one earned) in six innings.
Gath, Vickers and Dudley each had two hits for Bentley, which out-hit Northeastern 11-9. For NU, Heriot and sophomore center fielder Brad Czarnowski each had a pair.
