Freshman Kira Batura led four Huskies in double-digit kills as the Northeastern volleyball team downed UMBC 3-2 (27-30, 30-14, 23-30, 30-22, 15-13) Saturday night at Solomon Court. Senior Shannon Brooker recorded a career-high 16 kills and posted a career-tying seven blocks for NU who improves to 13-8 overall and 4-1 in America East play.
Emily Berman tallied six kills in the opening game to help the Retrievers grab game one 30-27.
It didn't take long for the Huskies to rebound in game two as they went up 20-8, led by five kills apiece from Karrin Moore and Whitney Turner. NU finished off UMBC 30-14 in the second game.
Just as the momentum shifted between games one and two, so it did between games two and three. Despite seven kills from Batura, UMBC used five kills from Berman and another five from Jocelyn Teoh to claim game three 30-23.
Six of Brooker's seven blocks came in the fourth game as the Huskies racked up ten total blocks in the frame. Batura added another five kills for the Huskies, who limited the Retrievers to a .191 attack percentage while garnering a .262 mark of their own. NU took game four 30-22.
In the heated fifth and final game of the match, Moore registered four kills for the Huskies, who finished off UMBC 15-13.
Batura notched 19 kills and 28 digs for her ninth double-double of the year. Moore totaled 15 kills and Adomat added 12 kills for NU, who hit .240 for the match. Ashley Adamczyk recorded a match-high 30 digs to extend her streak to 30 matches with double-digits digs. Freshman setter Bree Peterson posted 65 assists.
Berman led the Retrievers with a match-high 21 kills and Julia Hood and Teoh added 19 and 10, respectively. Teoh also recorded 12 digs.
Northeastern will hit the road in the America East for the first time this season when it travels to Maine on Fri., Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. The Huskies will continue to New Hampshire on Sat., Oct. 23 at 4 p.m.
