A match-high 18 kills from senior outside hitter Whitney Turner propelled the Northeastern volleyball team to a 3-0 (30-26, 30-18, 30-27) win over Binghamton (9-11, 0-2 America East) Friday night at Solomon Court. With the win, the Huskies improved to 11-7 overall and remain undfeated in conference play with a 2-0 mark.
The teams battled back and forth through the first game with four lead changes and nine ties. Northeastern went up by five at 20-15, but the Bearcats clawed back to pull even at 23 and again at 25. A 5-1 spurt by the Huskies, that included two kills from Turner and one from Karrin Moore, wrapped up the first game 30-26.
The beginning of game two saw much of the same battle as the opening contest, but Northeastern embarked on a decisive 11-0 run to stretch its advantage to 21-11, using four kills from Turner. The final 9-7 run gave the Huskies game two 30-18.
The Bearcats grabbed the lead early in the third game at 9-8 and did not relinquish it until the Huskies worked their way back to a 26-26 tie. A slide kill from Ashley Reeves put NU on top 27-26, but a cross-court shot from Jen Smith knotted the score again at 27. Northeastern capitalized on two Binghamton attack errors and used another kill from Reeves to wrap up the final game 30-27.
Smith recorded a team-high 12 kills and Michele Heck added 10 for the Bearcats who hit for a .131 mark for the contest. Kira Batura led Northeastern with a match-high 17 digs and senior libero Ashley Adamczyk posted 15 digs for her 27th straight match with double-digit digs.
Northeastern returns to Solomon Court Sat., Oct. 9 when they face America East rival Albany at 7 p.m.
