Kira Batura and Whitney Turner recorded 41 combined kills as the Northeastern volleyball team defeated UMBC 3-1(37-39, 24-30, 30-27, 23-30)Friday night at RAC Arena. The Huskies improved to 19-10 overall and 10-3 in America East play.
UMBC trailed 29-26 in the first set before Julia Waclawiak rallied UMBC as she served the Retrievers to three-straight points and a 29-29 tie. The set would see-saw back and forth until an attacking error by UMBC's Jocelyn Teoh broke a 37-37 tie, allowing Batura to hit the game-winning kill on the next point and give NU the 1-0 advantage.
The Huskies used 18 kills and a .389 hitting percentage in the second set to take advantage of UMBC's .128 hitting percentage (13 kills on 47 attacks) and take a 2-0 set advantage.
The Retrievers retaliated by taking the third set as Teoh dropped seven kills and Berman five for the Retrievers. The Huskies, however, forced 11 attacking errors by UMBC in the fourth set and hit .300 with 17 kills to end the match with a 3-1 victory.
Teoh recorded a match-high 26 kills with a .206 hitting percentage. She also extended her double-double streak to seven straight with 14 digs. Berman finished with 17 kills and Jessie Folk added 11. Gross recorded a double-double with 14 digs to go with her 53 assists.
The Huskies were lead by 21 kills from Batura and 20 from Turner. Ashley Adamczyk had a big night with 32 digs while Batura's double-double came with 20 digs. Bree Peterson recorded a team-high 30 assists.
Northeastern travels to Stony Brook tomorrow night in its last regular season match of the year. Match time is slated for 7 p.m.
