Kaili Jordan recorded a match-high 22 kills as Maine defeated the Northeastern volleyball team 3-1 (30-25, 30-28, 31-33, 30-25) in America East action Saturday night at Solomon Court. Freshman Kira Batura led four Huskies with double-digit kills and Ashley Adamczyk set a new school record with 39 digs in the match as NU fell to 18-10 overall and 9-3 in league play.
Maine took its first lead in game one at 7-6 and never let NU take it back, going up by as many as seven at 23-17. Leah Guidinger tallied five kills in the opening contest as the Black Bears recorded a .220 attack percentage to a .159 mark for Northeastern.
The Huskies came out on top in the beginning of game two, but Maine tied it up at 15 on a quick kill in the middle from Shannon Fotter. The visitors proceeded to take their first lead at the game with a block from Fotter and Carmen Morgan. NU refused to go away as it fought back to a tie at 23 using a kill from Whitney Turner off the hands of two Maine blockers. However, Maine railled back and pushed ahead to take the second game 30-28.
In game three, the Huskies again rallied from behind to tie the score at 13 before taking a 14-13 lead on a Maine attack error. NU lead by as many as five at 22-17, but allowed Maine to sneak back to within two at 22-20. The Huskies held on to the lead and extended it to as many as four at 28-24. The Black Bears fought off three NU game points and the two teams proceeded to tie and trade the lead back and forth until Northeastern was able to put away the game 33-31.
Maine took a large lead in the fourth and final game, leading by as many as nine at 18-9 before Northeastern was able to chip into the lead and claw its way back to a tie at 25 on a slide kill from Ashley Reeves. Maine embarked on a 5-0 run to finish out the match with a 30-25 win in game four.
Batura led the Northeastern pack with 16 kills, followed by Karrin Moore's 15, Larissa Adomat's 13 and Whitney Turner's 10. Batura added 27 digs for her 11 double-double of the season. Adamczyk broke the school record for most digs in a match with 39, a record she set earlier this year with 38 against Stony Brook on Oct. 15. Bree Peterson tallied 17 digs and 58 assists. Adomat and Reeves both posted three total blocks for the Huskies.
Jordan added 20 digs to her match-high 22 kills for the Black Bears. Guuidinger posted 17 kills and 12 digs and Morgan and Brittany Howe both tallied 13 kills for Maine, who improved to 14-10 overall and 8-4 in the America East. Setter Shelly Seipp recorded a match-high 64 assists and a team-high 30 digs.
Prior to tonight's match, NU's four seniors were honored as they played their last home match at Solomon Court. The 2004 senior class includes Ashley Adamczyk, Shannon Brooker, Karrin Moore and Whitney Wienkoop.
Northeastern will travel to UMBC and Stony Brook next weekend, Nov. 12-13, to finish out the America East regular season. Both matches are slated for 7 p.m.
