Freshman Kira Batura tallied a match-high 32 digs and Whitney Turner led four Huskies in double-digit kills with a match-high 21 as Northeastern pulled out a five-game win (30-25, 30-32, 26-30, 30-23, 15-12) over BIG EAST member Connecticut Tuesday night at Solomon Court. With the win, NU pulls to 4-4 on the season.
Larissa Adomat and Ashley Reeves joined Turner and Batura with 14 and 12 kills, respectively. Batura added 10 kills to record her first double-double of her career. Reeves added a match-high seven blocks.
Heather Ashley and Jamie Hadenfeldt led UConn with 16 kills apiece and Sade Chambers added 10 for Connecticut, who also evens to 4-4 on the season.
Northeastern jumped out to a big lead early in the first game, leading by as many as 10 at 20-10. The UConn Huskies mounted a comeback, embarking on a 10-3 run, to pull to 23-20 using five kills from Chambers. NU rebounded quickly, forcing three attack errors from UConn, and finished out the game 30-25.
The teams traded the lead and knotted the score a combined 17 times in the second game, but UConn capitalized on a NU attack error and Hadenfeldt served out the game with a service ace to capture the second game 32-30.
Game three saw much of the same action as in game two, with both teams swapping the advantage. After a knot at 22, UConn went on a 8-4 tear and closed out the third game 30-26.
The Huskies of Northeastern took the lead when they forced an UConn attack error on the opening play of the fourth game and never looked back. The NU offense hit for a .333 mark in the fourth frame and commited four errors, compared to a .205 mark and eight errors from UConn. Karrin Moore finished off the game for Northeastern with a cross-court kill from the right side and NU forced a fifth game with a 30-23 win.
NU used the momentum from the fourth game in the opening plays of the fifth to jump ahead 3-1, but the UConn Huskies responded, pulling even with Northeastern and edging out ahead 10-9 on a kills from Chambers. Two consecutive solo blocks from Turner and Reeves gave NU the advantage at 13-11 and two kills from the pair handed Northeastern the final game 15-12.
Northeastern will participate in the Ohio State Invitational this weekend, beginning Friday with a match against Big Sky member Montana State at Noon. The Huskies will follow with a match against host No. 25 Ohio State at 7 p.m.
