Sophomore outside hitter Whitney Turner recorded a career-high 26 kills as the Northeastern volleyball team edged cross-town rival Harvard for a 3-2 win Tuesday night at Solomon Court. Junior middle Larissa Adomat tallied a season-high 19 kills for the Huskies who improve to 9-7 on the season.
In the opening contest, the Huskies grabbed the lead until Harvard was able to knot the score at 11 and again at 14. A cross-court slide kill from Adomat gave NU a 19-16 advantage and the Huskies pounced on the Crimson, reeling off seven straight points to stretch their lead to 25-16. NU was able to finish off the game on a 5-2 run to wrap it up 30-18.
Despite nine second-game kills from Turner, Northeastern was unable to gain the lead at all in the contest. The Huskies tied it up at 11 and 14, but that is as close at they would get as the Crimson used seven kills from Suzie Trimble and five from Kaego Ogbechie to close out the game 30-26.
The teams traded the advantage in the third game, but Adomat chipped in seven kills to lead NU to a 30-20 win. The Huskies racked up a .333 attack percentage, compared to a .190 mark for Harvard.
NU held the lead for the majority of the fourth game until Harvard forced an NU attack error and took the lead at 24-23. The Crimson never looked back as they took on a 6-1 run to force a fifth game with a 30-24 win in game four.
Turner added four kills in the fifth game as Northeastern closed out Harvard 15-7 to take the match 3-2.
For the match, Northeastern held the edge in attack percentage with a .253 clip, compared to a .140 mark for the Crimson. Turner has posted six matchs with 20 or more kills on the season. Ashley Adamczyk tallied a match-high 36 digs in the contest.
Trimble paced the Crimson with 14 kills and Ogbechie and Turley-Molony added 12 and 11, respectively.
The Huskies will begin America East play on Tues., Oct. 5 when they host Hartford at 7 p.m. at Solomon Court.
