The Northeastern baseball team scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning, aided by two passed balls, to come back and defeat Albany, 3-2, in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Varsity Field in Albany, N.Y.
Down 2-1, sophomore Dan Milano led off the eighth with a double and junior Chris Emanuele notched an infield single to put runners at first and second with one out. Then, Albany pitcher Shawn Ryan's pitch to junior Arman Sidhu got away from catcher Tom Hill to move the runners up 90 feet. Senior Jeff Heriot grounded out to shortstop, scoring Milano. Hill then let another pitch get past him, allowing Emanuele to cross the plate with what became the winning run.
Sophomore starter Adam Ottavino (3-4) kept NU (11-14, 4-0 America East) in the game by tossing 8-2/3 innings, allowing just one run on eight hits. He walked one and struck out nine.
In the bottom of the ninth, with two men on and two outs, the Huskies turned to senior Tim Bush, who got the last out of the game and picked up his first save of the season.
Albany (8-10, 1-3 America East) starter Kyle Thomas (0-1) took the loss.
The Huskies will seek a doubleheader sweep in game two. Senior Devin Monds will start for Northeastern.
