America East Tournament Northeastern 7, Binghamton 3

Northeastern advanced to the winners bracket of the America East Tournament with a 7-3 win over Binghamton Thursday afternoon at Centennial Field in Burlington, Vt.

NU will play Maine, which beat Vermont, 14-2, at 3:30 p.m while Binghamton will play the Catamounts at noon.

Sophomore Adam Ottavino (8-4), named the conference's Pitcher of the Year yesterday, pitched a valiant seven and two-thirds innings, allowing three runs on 10 hits.

Ottavino fanned five batters, passing Donald Eason in the school record books for most strikeouts in a single season. Ottavino now has 106 punchouts this year while Eason had the record for 51 years with 101 strikeouts.

Things could have been a lot worse for Ottavino early. In the first inning, he allowed two hits and a walk to load the bases with only one out. However, he struck out Justin Smucker and got Jeff Monaco to ground out to end the inning and strand the baserunners.

The Bearcats (23-25) did get to Ottavino in the sixth when Mathieu Bergeron homered to right and Pat Haughie hit a two-run single to cut the Huskies' lead to 4-3.

Clinging to a one-run lead, the Huskies scored three runs in the seventh inning. Binghamton starter Jarrod Rampey (5-5) balked in a run with the bases loaded and then junior Matt Morizio roped a two-run single to right to give NU a 7-3 advantage. The Huskies (26-21) scored their first two runs in the first inning off of Rampey. Junior Chris Emanuele scored on a wild pitch and junior Arman Sidhu scored on a sacrifice fly to left by senior Jeff Heriot.

NU tacked on two in the third inning when senior Tim Bush doubled down the left field line to give the team a 4-0 lead.

The Huskies are one win closer to an America East title. With a win over the Black Bears tomorrow, NU will put itself in the final on Saturday.
