The Northeastern baseball team got six shutout innings from freshman Kris Dabrowiecki and four hits, including a homer and two doubles, from senior Tim Bush to defeat Harvard, 10-3, Tuesday afternoon at O'Donnell Field. The win is head coach Neil McPhee's 500th victory of his career.
McPhee's 500th win in his 20th season comes as no surprise as the Husky skipper has had winning teams throughout his tenure with NU. A Northeastern Hall of Famer, inducted in 1980, McPhee has produced three America East titles and three NCAA appearances. He has coached teams to 25 or more wins in a season 12 times including in each of the last three seasons. He is also a two-time America East Coach of the Year, winning the honor in 1991 and 1994.
In addition to McPhee's milestone victory, junior Chris Emanuele doubled to lead off the game, breaking NU's all-time hitting streak mark of 17 games. Emanuele has now recorded a hit in 18 consecutive games, surpassing Preston Carroll, who set the record for the Huskies in 1980. The Husky center fielder has a hit in 31 of NU's 36 games this season.
Emanuele helped put the Huskies (18-18) on the board in the first inning. After his leadoff double, Bush drove him home with an RBI double down the left field line, giving NU a 1-0 lead.
Bush struck again in the fourth inning with a solo home run to left center. Later in the inning, junior Brian Nutting drew a bases loaded walk for a 3-0 Huskies advantage.
NU added three runs in the eighth off of Harvard's Mike Dukovich. Freshman Mike Lyon doubled to right center, scoring sophomore Dan Milano. Emanuele then added the Huskies' fifth run with a sacrifice fly to right, allowing Nutting to score. Junior Arman Sidhu capped the inning with an RBI double to the gap in left center to bring home Lyon.
Harvard (24-15) could not get much off of Dabrowiecki (6-1), who pitched a sterling six innings, allowing just three hits. He walked none and struck out two.
Harvard however did get to junior Matt Morizio, the Huskies' regular catcher and former high school pitcher, for three runs in the bottom of the eighth when Josh Klimkiewicz homered to right with two men on to cut the Huskies' lead to 6-3.
The Huskies answered back with four runs in the ninth, thanks to a two-run single to left by Nutting and a two-run homer by Lyon, putting NU up by seven, 10-3. For Lyon, it was his eighth hit in his last 13 at-bats.
Crimson starter Jake Bruton (1-2) took the loss despite going three innings and allowing just one run.
NU, which is currently in first place in America East, will host second-place Binghamton, in a three-game series at Friedman Diamond, starting Saturday at noon.
