Northeastern notched its first Hockey East road victory of the season, 3-1 over #18 Vermont Friday night at Gutterson Fieldhouse. The Huskies managed to register three goals, including an empty-netter, on 16 total shots.

After the Catamounts jumped on the board 24 seconds into the contest, NU's defense locked down and carried the momentum into the second period. Rookie Justin Daniels and senior Kyle Kraemer provided the one-two punch for the Huskies' third win over a ranked team this season. Junior Wade MacLeod put away the empty-netter to leapfrog Vermont in the conference standings.

Kraemer logged his fourth multi-point game of the season, eighth overall, while junior Tyler McNeely recorded his sixth point in three games by way of a pair of helpers. McNeely is riding a three-game point streak while MacLeod's unchallenged goal moved his streak to five, marking a career-best.

Freshman goaltender Chris Rawlings smoothed out his record to 8-8-1 with an 18-save performance while UVM goaltender Rob Madore earned the loss with 13 saves.

“I think Rawlings' pad save on the back door (of the second period) turned things around for us,” head coach Greg Cronin said. “This is definitely a big road win for this team.”

Vermont wasted no time lighting the lamp as Colin Vock crossed Rawlings just 24 ticks in for the 1-0 lead. Vock accepted a pass from Justin Milo in UVM's zone and streaked down the right side. Vock wheeled around a Northeastern defender and ripped one past Rawlings' blocker on the doorstep.

The first period did not yield any other goals while the Catamounts outshot Northeastern, 8-2, in the first 20 minutes of action.

The Huskies responded in similar fashion to start the second as J. Daniels evened the count 54 seconds into the middle stanza. Kraemer snapped the puck out of Northeastern territory to McNeely along the near boards. NU's captain settled into the corner and zipped the puck towards the crease where J. Daniels won the battle against UVM goalie Rob Madore. J. Daniels now has four goals on the season.

Northeastern procured its first lead of the contest on a Kraemer tally at 10:50 of the second period. The Huskies controlled the pace in UVM's zone as McNeely generated the scoring play from behind the net. Freshman Jake Newton received the dish from McNeely and unleashed a snapshot from the left point. Madore was negligent with the rebound and Kraemer positioned himself to slip it through his pads for the 2-1 edge.

Throughout the remainder of the second carrying over to the third, Northeastern did an outstanding job of blocking shots and cutting off passing lanes to keep the Catamounts of the scoreboard.

Even though Vermont controlled the pace in the Huskies' zone the last moments of the game, MacLeod sent the puck into the empty at 19:45 from Northeastern's blue line to solidify the 3-1 final. Senior Greg Costa and sophomore Drew Muench joined forces to help out on the play.

Northeastern and Vermont seal the three-game regular season series Saturday at 7 p.m.
