Hunter breaks NU record, owns country's best mark

Senior shot putter Nate Hunter rewrote the record books on Saturday at the Harvard Invitational by recording the longest toss in Northeastern University history with a winning mark of 19.37m  (63'6.75”). Hunter, a two-time All-American, automatically qualified for the NCAA Championship on Friday, March 12 in Fayetteville, Ark. with his record-setting heave.

The fourth-year phenom overcame Derek Anderson's four-year old benchmark of 62'6.5" set on March 5, 2006.

Hunter's extraordinary distance stands as the country's longest mark in the shot put thus far in the 2009-10 season. The Gloucester, Mass. native surpassed Mason Finley's (Kansas University) mark of 19.10m (62'8”) set on Dec 5, 2009.

The Huskies also captured four other winning marks, a second-place showing and a pair of third-place performance at the Gordon Track & Tennis Center in Cambridge.

Newcomer Chris Conway tasted victory in the 60-meter hurdles to the tune of 8.40 while senior Justin Benjaminsen put a wrap on third place with a time of 9.34. Freshman Alex Mostone picked up fourth in the same even after crossing in 9.87.

Junior Brian Racca strung together a winning combination of 13.91m in the triple jump while rookie Tejorn Davis finished up in second place with a mark of 13.46m.

Third-year jumper Andrew Staples won his second-consecutive high jump event after clearing 2.00m. Last week, Staples claimed the high jump at the Dartmouth Relays with a measure of 2.03m. Staples also earned fourth in the long jump with a vault of 6.50m.

Brian Daly flung himself over 4.55m to seize victory in the pole vault while freshman Rafael Rodriguez gathered third after leaping over 4.10m in the same event.

Junior James Pellerano and freshman Chris Mentas took four laps around the track, turning out respective times of 4:25.71 and 4:33.50 in the mile for eighth and 14th. Sticking with distance, senior Kyle Audet finished the 3,000-meter challenge in seventh with a time of 8:57.42.

Senior Konrad Stefanek broke out a time of 53.69 for seventh in the 400-meter run while Joseph Albani crossed the line in 10th with a mark of 54.46.

Freshman Luke Malley was awarded fifth in the 800-meter by closing out a pair of laps in 2:01.50 whereas classmate Anthony Gentles was clocked in 23.34 for eighth in the 200-meter dash.

Sophomores Sebastian Putzeys and Daniels Grant generated times of 2:31.73 and 2:35.51, respectively, for fourth and sixth place in the 1,000-meter run while senior Brian Kennedy was tabbed ninth with his mark of 2:36.83.

Hunter's classmate, Michael Page, cleared 14.53m in the shot put for sixth place while rookie Mark Mastone and sophomore Steve Caprio picked up 11th and 12th, in that order, with measurements of 12.76m and 12.69m.

The Huskies will take a weekend off before returning to the Reggie Lewis Center to host the Boston Indoor Games on Friday, January 29.
