Hunter tops 25 of the country's best in Arkansas

Results

Senior All-American Nate Hunter and junior Althea Charles represented Northeastern track & field proudly at the University of Arkansas' Tyson Invitational on Friday and Saturday.

Fayetteville, Ark. is the site of this year's NCAA Indoor Championship. Hunter automatically qualified for the big stage with his school-record toss of 19.49m (63'11.5) in the shot put while Charles posted a provisional mark of 18.95m (62'2.25) in the weight throw. Both heaves came at the Boston Indoor Games.

Hunter topped 25 of America's best shot putters with a launch of 18.66 (61'2.75), but was not able to overcome Arizona State's Ryan Whiting. Whiting's lob of 21.52m (70'7.25) won the event while Hunter's mark was good enough for second.

Hunter's school record stood as the best mark in the country for a time until Whiting topped it on Feb. 5 at the New Mexico Classic & Combined. Whiting's pitch at the Tyson Invitational stands as the country's best mark thus far.

Charles bested 23 other competitors with an 11th-place toss of 17.39m (57'0.75) in the weight throw. Charles still has two more chances to automatically qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championship to compete alongside Hunter at the New England Championship and the ECAC Championship on Feb. 26 and March 6, respectively.
